At least the idea of contract-based societies had been practiced, for centuries, in Medieval Europe. Serfs were bound to manors by "contracts" alone. Of course, the power imbalance made this irrelevant, as we all have seen how that actually worked out. It was "collective bargaining", thru the gun, that finally changed this state of affairs.
