You'd log in, get the (terrible) purple rio, and then there's a chat window where everyone's talking, an acme window and a page(1) window and the in-memory grid disk, so someone would talk about something and plumb an image or a URL and the shared plumber would put it on everyone's screen. It was fucking cool.

Ah man that does sound fucking cool. I'd heard about 9gridchan back then but didn't know enough about plan9 to really get what it was about. Having a little community based around interconnected machines is something I've dreamt a bit of: I wanted to do something like that with emulated Lisp machines where you'd connect with Xpra or VNC or whatever and it'd spawn one and they'd all be connected through Chaosnet. And then upstream from there you could have a Unix box or something as a file server; there's a little hobbyist network of bridged machines that talk Chaosnet to each other, mostly emulated but some guys run actual hardware: @suzuran was running a real legit PDP-10 on there last time I was around but I haven't checked on that scene in a while.
