Interesting effortpost dropped about institutional level internet censorship calling it the "closure of the internet". It's very tl;dr but it goes into detail what many of the top social media sites did from 2015-22, and breaks it down into two phases, the post Trump/Brexit era of 15-19, and the COVID lockdown era of 2020-22.

Also it tellingly mentions that it never ended, Twitter just dialed back and everyone else has the infrastructure in place.

Of course there are also people who will deny with a smile that this actually happened.

@sendpaws most people don't really know what the word "enclosure" is who probably should. it's exactly what the tech sector has been slowly being drug through post-dot com boom.

there's a book "technofeudalism" about it--amazon et all quietly becoming inescapable commons places (every photographer must be on instagram or doesn't exist, every product must be on amazon or doesn't exist) despite not being subject to commons-esque social regulation (amazon does what it wants and is backed by DOD money, making it relatively immune to boycotts)

i think open communication proved to be too powerful for nation states and its been a really protracted fight to revoke it without causing An Event. (i liken it to a game where controllers are trying to maximize the size of a shape without ever touching the death triangle; a shape that causes you to lose, but there is no way to know that you have found it, as intersecting it causes whoever does so to die.)

@sendpaws basically we have known fail states which are few but well identified

      - when food costs more than about 50% of day wages, peasant revolt is guaranteed
      - when privileges are granted and summarily revoked, riots are very likely

its basically a long con of measuring out how much you can take back at a time, normalizing it, and repeating, the "boiling the frog" strategy, where by the time a resistance forms they implicitly accept most of your control anyway (they're arguing to undo your latest power grab, not that your entire paradigm of control was never valid to begin with)

@sendpaws the chinese arc is wild. i had to shrug eventually because the chinese clones finally surpassed the west, and the west heavily migrated out of engineering in to "laurel sitting."

the quality differential between an anker and a bose qc headphone is not much. my only issue is my head is too large for it (which anker could possibly have fixed in newer models, i don't know), but its 80% of the sound quality and also lets you turn DSP off (the QCs for some reason don't allow a "neutral" option, despite being 300$ MSRP)

i dunno that i'd credit amazon much for this. it's really just shenzen doesn't have a government trying to commit economic suicide presiding over it, which can't be said for the USA

@icedquinn the other thing with amazon is the wal-mart effect x10000

Your local Home Depot's fuses or something are just missing or have empty bags because someone ripped it open and shot it out the door, Digikey shipping is a gamble on what the shipping speed actually is....Amazon has some name you've never heard of and fuses that will not actually pop, with next day shipping, and then everything else you want for less than the price the store charges if they have it.

Also the snapper mower story happens quite a bit in the industries and I'm sure it does with Amazon too:

@sendpaws basically if you're in the USA and you say "i want to do $literallyanything" and just start trying to do it, you run in to invisible malregulation walls everywhere. in India they're just blatently bribe seeking, in the states its a little better hidden. It's still rent sought and lobbied to fuck and back, it's just that only business owners SEE it, so normies are allowed to believe it doesn't happen.

we see this a lot here with like EPA malregs that ban an american from making any kind of pollutant (it's impossible to manufacture without any pollution) but the tariff policy doesn't selectively cut by compliance, so it basically just takes american manufacturing behind the woodshed.

@icedquinn That's why this post is so good, it basically says that internet clampdowns did not change public opinion but rather radicalized people harder because "the jews did this" wasn't a funny joke anymore after seeing the people you like be targeted by the NGOs.

It also failed at a lot of goals, from keeping Trump out to the rise of the populist right in Europe, to trying to keep people up to date with the latest COVID script because turns out all it did was make people lose trust. Instead, those ended up happening because of how people felt about real world issues.

they need the hitler story to buy legitimacy and people have been exceptionally generous with selling it to them. the more the state starts acting like literal hitler i think the more people have gotten cross with this.

britain has even outright said shit like "they act in ways that make it difficult for their allies to support them"

I think what's worse is they're choosing synthesis over surrender or fighting it, so now you have a public-private blend of oppression where the government part of it makes it inescapable and the corporation part of it makes it unaccountable, and it can shapeshift between the two as needed. @sendpaws @mrsaturday soviets kind of weird because it wasn't exactly the traditional corpo model.

amerofascism is exactly dancing between "private" and "public" based on "what lets us do this without oversight today," where soviets still had to face resource distribution issues even if everything is 'supposed' to be publicly owned.

@sendpaws @mrsaturday basically USSR didn't even need to do this dance they just literally had a police state from the start. (Prior to WW2 breaking out, soviet academics were even arguing about how much of the corpo model should really even be in socialism. there were experiments with work calendars and such to minimize burnout / maximize actual hourly production)

America has to at least do a little song and dance so corruption is slightly hidden behind the stage.

@icedquinn @sendpaws The USSR fell apart because it was an empire and it had to rely on gaslighting its member states into keeping them placid. The moment someone showed up and said "Hey, let's stop gaslighting people", it fell apart. There was also the issue of many of the member states being so thoroughly unhappy with being under Russia's thumb that they were willing to give the Nazis a shot, even though the Nazis thought of them as less than human and were open about wanting to genocide them if they won.

I don't think the US is on nearly as shaky of a foundation as the USSR was on, but the whole "red state/blue state" garbage does make us fairly susceptible. California and Texas could absolutely be viable independent countries if they ever got to that point, for instance, and you've seen them start to talk like it in recent years. Not a great sign for the country long-term, especially when the federal government has a bit of a legitimacy problem with people under the age of 40

@mrsaturday @sendpaws the united states hypernormalized internal gaslighting all the same (operation mockingbird, repealing the smith-mundt acts)

this particular failure mode is kinda known these days. gen 1 psy ops know they're full of shit, but they raise a generation on horseshit and gen 2 psy ops can't believe the truth when they're shown it was all an elaborate narrative. one of the soviet defectors even wrote the whole book on this particular cancer :comfyderp:

i tend to think if they listened to the cyberneticists harder they would have had a better time. the soviets beat the USA on technical grounds time and time again, and the political layer was too busy adult high schoolers to actually field it. (they even beat us to having an internet, but the military was busy trying to hold chits over the politburo and blocked rolling it out)

america isn't good at sourcing innovations. most of our innovators end up being imported europeans. we're a great place to be a pre-accredited businessman, and a terrible place to be born.

@mrsaturday @sendpaws basically stalin/lenin had a fundamentally incompatible understanding of nature. the west relies on permanent underclasses for labor. soviets by definition cannot. so "match and overtake" was never going to happen playing the human game. without the ability to flex to china or some other slave caste, they could not match a structural output which depends on exactly that.

they could have instead gone the Deming route. if the products were Very Good but slow to produce and expensive, you would kind of end up with Switzerland instead, which is OK because if your cars and TVs are built very well then it matters less if they take a long time to get distributed, the old stuff will just cycle around the economy and keep working. and without the profit motive you don't get planned obsolescence, which means it's really just a matter of time before everyone really does get a car. (and, insidiously, if your stuff is actually good you can mark say 10% off for exports and then people go "communists made the most baller ass cars maybe we should rethink that")

instead stalin just tried to ... re-create the permanent underclass with gulags, which fundamentally was never going to give them what they hoped for. :blobcatpain:

@mrsaturday @sendpaws basically lying about the output was structurally enforced from a misunderstanding of reality and everything else about the USSR just falls out from that.

CIA rhetoric aside, the west didn't shit their pants for no reason. The shit very nearly worked.

@subnetter @icedquinn @sendpaws Israel is judaism though. They're just the more militant form of judaism. The other jews aren't too different, they'd just rather have someone else do the genociding than risk themselves doing it. This sometimes leads to civil/religious wars, which has been a staple of judaism for as long as it has existed.

@nerthos @icedquinn @sendpaws @subnetter there's clearly some european-derived racism in the mix too, like hostility to ethiopian jews but I don't really see how you can separate israel from judaism, a lot of its characteristics are definitely derived from that and not just western colonialist attitudes. when I lived in arizona I knew a sephardic jew that told me about how shitty she was treated by other jews in america.

@sun @icedquinn @sendpaws @subnetter They've been at it since before they were jews proper. They love to complain about Rome tearing them five new assholes, but it took three civil wars, genocide of roman families and merchants before Rome had any sort of real presence in the region, and literally turning every settlement they had into little forts after mobilizing all their population against Rome to get there.
I'm pretty sure it was similar in Egypt too, since their behaviour has been consistent for as long as we have proper records.

@caohuak @sendpaws I think there is a big difference between being defederated and being deplatformed. In fediverse you don't need to start from scratch, you can move between servers and you can start your own.

Some people may not like you and be very loud about it, but ultimately they only have as much power as others give them. The best strategy is to ignore the haters and keep doing your own thing.

@silverpill @sendpaws >But everyone is still using centralized platforms like there is no tomorrow.

While things might be slightly better on decentralized platforms like Fedi, they aren't much better; the obsession with "censorship" has spread here too. If it hadn't reached this place, most instances wouldn't have such a long list of rules, but rather a simple code of conduct that everyone could agree on.

I mean on fedi, the moment you get on a defed list, its basically being deplatformed because of how lists get spread. Most new servers on the network import a bunch of blocklists from the getgo. Hell some stacks have integrated blocklists. There are clients with integrated blocklists (usually denying logins for certain domains). Fedblock has even spilled over into sysadmin abuse blocklists.

Mastodon got a grant to implement that (via Fires), and there is literally zero chance their user collections thing will never be used to spread blocklists of people like on bsky.

like you have entire fucking fed organizations that are basically funded to import twitter censorship onto the fedi like https://about.iftas.org/

and fucking evan is too busy stroking his cock to the fact that 'hes the creator of fedi' or some shit while contributing essentially nothing valuable to the network beyond actively promoting the censorship of it

@theorytoe @sendpaws @caohuak Yes, and you can just ignore all of this. The part on the network that is free of blocklists is big enough to be interesting. What this part of the network doesn't have, apparently, is people who will be interested in growing it.

If you know of people that won't destroy the culture of the network and seek power over everyone like in the great Twitter to Mastodon exodus over 5 years ago, I would be interested. Main thing this network needs is gatekeeping that prevents takeovers of the network. It has been taken over enough as it currently is.

until gatekeeping is valued culturally this will continue to be a problem. though a network that anyone can federate with will eventually be homogenized and/or taken over by the majority take

      @phnt @theorytoe @sendpaws @caohuak I nominate everybody in this thread.

I agree that gatekeeping is necessary, but it should be done with care. In my opinion "the culture" is not worth preserving, the network should consist of hundreds of bubbles separated by language, geography and political preferences.

I am completely serious - only Dark Fedi people can be trusted with maintenance of the most important communication protocol of the 21th century.

@phnt @theorytoe @sendpaws @caohuak I want everyone here. All social networks, video platforms, messengers, even email.

How to deal with the consequences of technology becoming ubiquitous is a separate question, I think. Twitter migration was disruptive because almost nobody was prepared for it but we're still here, the network survived.

The current one likely is not worth it. The one from 5+ years ago was, but now is too late for that.

      >I nominate everybody in this thread.
I meant it in "Do you know someone that should be here, but isn't yet." way. Because I genuinely struggle with that, the only one I know doesn't care about social media besides following artists (he would hate misskey.io). You can grow the network with interesting features, but at this point I'm not convinced that if you make a good alternative to walled gardens, people will naturally come. We've had that already and it didn't end well.

@icedquinn @sendpaws I would argue that it doesn't exactly apply because fascism was inherently nativist and patriotic, but it's obvious at this point that Western cosmopolitan elites view themselves as a separate enough entity from everybody else that elites might as well be their own ethnicity from a functionality standpoint

Ironic considering that kfcc posters and orbiters used to be the better quality posters. Sleepy gang, FCE, Cyberia, all came from there. At some point in late 2021 something changed, so I left Fedi for a year, don't even remember what the reason fully was. Probably poasties and politics becoming prevalent (an issue to this day).

@phnt @theorytoe @silverpill @caohuak my theory with migration is that "the normies" will only come if it's polished, normie friendly, marketed, and used enough. Normies have a huge mentally-imposed barrier to anything new/different where the second anything goes wrong they give it up and want their Windows back.

Apple is the only company who could bypass this, take a guess on why.

The "culture" kind of rotted with the great Keffals/LFJ op to shutdown Kiwi Farms and the userbase there used it as a bunker for a while, along with poasties, Jim being banned on Twitter for a while, and then the Mastodon side trying to take over before being given their own reservation to be on (Bluesky). I unfortunately wasn't there for much of the old stuff, I literally tried to use SPC when it was a GS instance and it felt like me and a few friends were trying to force ourselves to use it.

genuinely politics is a good indicator of normification. that and celebrity pop culture discussion. the general discussion ends up just being complaining and only complaining
