     @Em0nM4stodon if that happens and is coupled with laws requiring ID for the purchase of the phone/contract, we are looking at outright totalitarianism in tech.

     At least in Italy (but I'm quite confident it is the same all over Europe) we need and always needed to give our ID to buy any SIM card/ phone subscription. There's no such thing as a burner phone.

     @nicolaottomano @dckim @Em0nM4stodon My US SIM has international roaming at $20 USD for 10 days, so $75/mo. That's half of what most US postpaid mobile customers pay for domestic use only.

     @dalias @dckim @Em0nM4stodon Yes, but how much would cost to operate it in Italy for everyday use? Basically if you have an everyday SIM in Italy, it's assigned to your ID.

     @dckim @nicolaottomano @Em0nM4stodon Yes, a lot of the world does require this. Where I've had it, you usually fill out a form and provide copy of ID at the location where the SIM is purchased. It's active immediately so it's only checked in retrospect if at all.

     @dalias @nicolaottomano @Em0nM4stodon is there anywhere that requires the telephone number to be registered with the government in relation to the ID? That is what I am now wondering(Canadian).

     Is there a requirement and direct connection made through a government channel, or is it a nearly 'honour-system' from the phone company salesperson?

     I'm seeing a lot of people saying this has already been in place for a while in their country, never was an issue.
