   Tis was my breakfast...you may know what this is if you are a German or Japanese or grew up in either country.

   Japanese have loved this cake over a century...I'm no longer technically a Japanese but no matter, I love baumkuchen from the depth of my soul?

   But here's something I didn't know.

   It was baked by a German prisoner of war who was put in an internment camp in Japan during WWI.

     Here's the package of my "custard baumkuchen." Karl Juchheim may be amused how many different versions of baumkuchen are made in Japan. We have soft kind, hard kind, matcha green tea flavor, salt caramel flavor, chocolate....my recent favorite includes salty lemon.

     @smellsofbikes I don't mind translation question (to the extent I can answer)! I don't know the i/na adjective (I guess this is JP learner lingo) but methinks I got the gist. In JP we need ソフトな b/c ソフト itself is almost like noun ("softness"). But if there was no しっとり in the beginning, i.e., if it was ソフトカスタード風味, then you don't need な. I guess it's because しっとり modifies ソフト...if you have しっとりしたソフトカスタード風味 then it's ok without な after soft.

     EGGGGG..does this explain???????????????

     @YoWatShiinaEsq (transliteration question if you don't mind) at the bottom it seems to say sofuto_na_kusutaado. Why the な？Do they put that in because ソフト acts as a na-adjective?
     (Scared noises: do I have to figure out whether loanwords are i or na adjectives as well?)

     @YoWatShiinaEsq バウムクーヘンを日本に伝えた洋菓子店ユーハイムの歴史は、20世紀の二つの世界大戦の中での移民の生き様を思い起こさせますね。
     ユーハイムはドイツからですが、他にはロシア革命を逃れた「モロゾフ」（と今は無き「コスモポリタン」）の歴史も興味深いです。

     @akiolee いい記事ですね。ありがとうございます。（そしてユーハイムのお菓子作り哲学に共感します。なんでも「とろとろ、ふわふわ」にする傾向が味的にそもそも苦手です）

     モロゾフやコスモポリタンの歴史も知りませんでした。今度調べてみます！

     @smellsofbikes Ah ok! Yeah and as someone who studied English and French as a second/third language, I know there's a lot of irregularities and exceptions.

     There's even a saying:
     習うより慣れろ
     "Rather than studying, get used to it"
     ?

     I was a translator/interpreter but teaching JP is a whole different skill set. But I'm game whenever you want to try the above? (to the extent that I'm able)

     @YoWatShiinaEsq Thank you, and I think it does! (i vs na is like how 赤い車 is fine but きれいな車 needs a -na to connect kirei to a noun.)
     Thank you. I don't want to make people work teaching me language for free, but I'd never seen that usage before.

     オイラもバウムクーヘン、そしてユーハイムは大好きです。神戸育ちのせいか、子供の頃からユーハイムのバウムクーヘンはよく食べていました。神戸に洋菓子屋さんが多いのは第二次大戦時に多くのヨーロッパ系ユダヤ人が来たからだと思っていましたが、かーる・ユーハイム氏は第一次大戦のときに連れてこられたのですね。
