  One of the Roman Catholic West’s earlier, more notorious persecutions, was against the Cathars - who were essentially Manicheans, and were causing all sorts of social disorder in the 12th Century in southern France.   It’s more that various heretics over the years attempted to make unauthorized Biblical translations into common languages at the time. More recent examples of this - like Jehovah’s Witnesses “New World Translation” - are illustrative that the concern was and is basically valid.
