      @lolitechengineer@loli.church @phnt@pl.borked.technology @hfaust@shitposter.world It's not clear if the T480/T580 can ever be fully liberated. People still need to figure out a way to fully replace Intel ME.

      @SuperDicq@minidisc.tokyo @phnt@pl.borked.technology @hfaust@shitposter.world can't wait for the T480(s)/T580 to finish being liberated.

      By the way, the Dell Latitude e6400 has been an equally viable alternative to these old thonkpads for a while now and are still cheap. They even come in an XFR rugged variant too which are even more tanks than the ThinkPads are. Also the (first gen?) MacBooks are as well though they are kind of crap.

      @besserwisser@shitposter.world @phnt@pl.borked.technology @hfaust@shitposter.world If you manage achieve RYF certification the FSF will promote your business and send customers your way.

      But I know people who RYF stores and it is not as easy as it sounds. It is hard to keep everything in stock and ensure working condition for hardware like this. You also have to build infrastructure where people can place orders and pay without proprietary JavaScript which is also harder than it sounds thanks to shitty payment providers.

      @SuperDicq @hfaust @phnt I would like to have such a shop. And I know I said it sounds like "easy money" but I actually think businesses should have some difficulties to set up or else you would have too much competition and it's too hard to break into the industry again. That said, I could always start small, have at least a product that's 100% free software, sell small batches and work myself towards RYF certification.

      @besserwisser@shitposter.world @hfaust@shitposter.world @phnt@pl.borked.technology Yeah, there's not a lot of sellers, but it's also very niche. Most people aren't interested in RYF hardware because it is either super expensive (Like RaptorComputing Power 9 boards) or very old (X200 laptops or Asus D16 desktops).

      I believe most people unfortunately buy hardware that is "free with minimum required blobs", such as Librem or Starlabs hardware.

      Still much better than the average Windows computer that you can buy, but not as free as GNU Boot.

      Yeah, that's also mostly what I do. Except definitely more proprietary software than "minimum". Should get a more free machine and use that one when I don't "need" more performance or some non-free stuff.

      @SuperDicq @besserwisser @hfaust @phnt But, the KGPE-D16 is faster, with DDR3-1600 RAM and 32 cores.

      @Suiseiseki@freesoftwareextremist.com @besserwisser@shitposter.world @hfaust@shitposter.world @phnt@pl.borked.technology Yeah I regret buying a D8 to save 100 euros at the time. I should've gotten the D16. Still my D8 is perfectly adequate for what I need it to do.

      @SuperDicq @hfaust @besserwisser @phnt On a clock-for-clock basis, DDR4 and DDR5 isn't significantly faster than DDR3 - like 10-20% difference.

      @Suiseiseki@freesoftwareextremist.com @hfaust@shitposter.world @besserwisser@shitposter.world @phnt@pl.borked.technology It was high end at the time, especially because it is ECC but by today's standards it really isn't.

      @SuperDicq @hfaust @phnt Getting a 100% free software server is definitely a goal but I would have no idea where to even put it. Definitely couldn't host it from home while still living with my parents who absolutely refuse to get faster internet and when I do move out, it's gonna be hard finding a place which even offers fiber in Germany.

      @besserwisser@shitposter.world @hfaust@shitposter.world @phnt@pl.borked.technology Also I don't know how much business experience you have (considering you still live with your parents), but I do know a few people who run (or used to run) RYF stores and I can probably ask them to give you some guidance if you're serious about this.

      @besserwisser@shitposter.world @hfaust@shitposter.world @phnt@pl.borked.technology You could rent a colocation and put your own server into a rack.

      @besserwisser@shitposter.world @hfaust@shitposter.world @phnt@pl.borked.technology As far as I understand it. Running a RYF store and selling old refurbished hardware involves a lot of buying bulk lots of essentially discarded ewaste and manually refurbishing, replacing broken parts, flashing GNU Boot and testing extensively on every single machine you get which is actually a lot of work.

      @SuperDicq @hfaust @phnt I actually have a different business idea I'm working on right now and starting too many projects while never finishing any of them is a problem of mine. So I probably shouldn't spend too much time and effort on planning this right now. But in the long term, I don't see why I couldn't manage this alongside something else, so I might come back to you on that.

      @bonifartius @lolitechengineer @SuperDicq @phnt @hfaust Intel's RSA private keys have not been inserted into LLM's.

      Unlike console signatures, which are usually a joke (i.e. the keys are included in a bunch of places needlessly, or can be determined by making the software encrypt all 0 with the xor key), intel finally figured out how to do RSA correctly starting from the core i series.

      @Suiseiseki @SuperDicq @hfaust @lolitechengineer @phnt i meant the AI models. who knows what stuff they fed into those.

      the keys for consoles also always get out or worked around at some point.
