@apropos @AmericanChampion @Ghislaine if you tell 300,000 maids to clean your house and give them a budget of 20 trillion dollars and you come back and someone’s shit on the floor…

@sapphire @AmericanChampion @Ghislaine the wedge that lets cope in, is this: the military did not give up.The military was "winning" on the battlefield, and the US aligned government remained un-fallen, until after the political support collapsed. If you tell a maid to clean your room, and then mid-cleaning you come and kick the maid out of the room, it's really not correct to say that the room remains dirty because the maid failed.
This is a really easy and a persuasive argument, and it's definitely not fun to tell a guy that was there and remembers winning that he was losing, actually.
And the correction of it is subtler than "the objective as not met". It's this: if you tell a maid to clean your room, and then TEN YEARS LATER you tell her to stop, and the room's still not clean, then it really is correct to say that the room remains dirty because the maid failed.

@apropos @AmericanChampion @Ghislaine the goal of US intervention in Vietnam was to prevent the fall of the US aligned government in Saigon, and the task was assigned to the US military. This objective was not met. This was a failure to achieve the primary strategic goal of a defensive war and would be considered a “loss” by any objective observer.
The goal of the war in Afghanistan was to permanently remove the Afghani Taliban from power and to keep them from power, and the task was assigned to the US military. This objective was not met. This was a failure to achieve the primary strategic goal of an offensive war and would be considered a “loss” by any objective observer.

@sapphire @AmericanChampion @Ghislaine he said it wasn't a MILITARY defeat as opposed to Vietnam, and you dropped that word in your quote.
btw, I was raised around Vietnam vets who said that Vietnam wasn't a MILITARY defeat either, but a political one. Very similar cope. I tried to lift a big rock and I failed. Is it because I'm weak? No, my thighs are really good, it's just that I had some weak core muscles and I lost balance. Or maybe I need more training, I'm sure I could've done it if I'd maintained higher intra-abdominal pressure or if I'd better-exploited some neurological tricks to get more strength out of my muscles.
None of the cope is wrong, exactly, but it's still just more words to say "defeat".

@sapphire @Ghislaine Vietnam took place in an entirely different world order, and Afghanistan was not a military defeat, but a 'nation-building' effort that was later abandoned.
There is an enormous difference between trying and failing to destroy a state-level adversary and acknowledging that Afghans don't want to troon out their kids.

@sapphire @Ghislaine If the U.S. loses a major war, a lot of things come undone. Faith in the U.S. military's ability to dictate terms underpins our reserve currency status, and that's what ultimately funds 'dem programs'.

@Ghislaine They managed to survive and to meaningfully threaten Israel in return, which I think counts as success given their situation, especially since the U.S. had a finite supply of interceptors that are hard to replace.
Best case scenario is that it's another performance, and it gets the Save America act passed. Worst case scenario is that it's a clusterfuck and it sinks the administration, but at least that'd kill the empire once and for all.

@apropos @AmericanChampion @Ghislaine also the true wedge that lets cope in is that America didn’t lose anything the country cares about in the wars they lost, just a bunch of taxpayer money, white bodies and raw materials
