Btw I know that some instance admins are limiting Gaza accounts that repeatedly ask for donations over private means, but it looks like the staff of eldritch.cafe has gone quite overboard. I’ve taken a quick look at the accounts referenced in the original post and a large part of them has actually been limited on the instance:

@Barmaid is it possible to know what’s going on here? I understand that accounts who repeatedly ask for donations can annoy some users. But maybe worth keeping in mind that these are folks who are currently living in makeshift tents under pouring rain and need support, and some of the people on your instance are trying to support them.

@gomli @fabio @Barmaid Please do *not* create a single server. It’s a single point of failure. We should be encouraging distribution across a large number of servers for resiliency.
Please publicise this instead: https://gaza-verified.org/guide/#servers (or, more importantly, the Arabic version of the page at https://gaza-verified.org/guide-arabic/#servers) which is randomly ordered on each hit.

Hmm, if an instance really wants to block them, having everyone on the same instance certainly makes things easier, but given the small number, it's still easy for them to block them one by one. In short, I think it's a risk worth taking? And worst case scenario, have a backup account on a friendly server that is already well integrated into the federation.(Unrelated, but how often do you collect donation information Fabio?)

@Barmaid @gomli @aral a dedicated instance is an option that I considered at some point. However the biggest problem with that (besides federation reach) is that putting all the eggs in the same small basket just makes it easier for admins to defederate the instance…

@gomli Not on our software (Mastodon Glitch-Soc) as far as I know.
And this solution would need a lot of work because many instances (and some medium to big one like us) limit mastodon.social and co
They can move to others instances but it'll always be a tradeoff.
Bigger instances with less strict moderation have a bigger instance reach but will be limited because of it.A dedicated instance could work but take care about federation issues on small instances or they will not have good network reach

We really need to ask Palestinians not to register on these oversized servers.I wonder if, in the long run, the ideal solution would be to create a dedicated server for them?

@Barmaid @gomli thank you so much for reaching back and for the transparency about your decision! It’s reassuring that it wasn’t a specific action against the accounts from Gaza.
I understand how big instances can flood smaller ones and admins are sometimes required to take action, and I wish there was a silver bullet that doesn’t cause such collateral damage…

Hi ! We do not restrict people asking for donations. No measure has been taken against :

- @eslamradwan1_D_5The issue here is that we limit some big instances as a whole because of recurring spam waves. https://mastodon.social and https://mastodon.world are part of it and this is why any user on those instances will be limited by our instance.

I don't know what to do. Measures taken against instances are here for good reasons, but this is obviously a problem as we do not want to restrict reach and visibility for people in need.
I'll lift the limit on those two instances right now, at least temporarily, until I have the input of the rest of the team on how to proceed with this issue.
