@prettygood Who prints the money, not who makes the money. Who makes the regulations that allow the big "corporations" to stay afloat. If money really was power then why can the government just make more of it.

This is the true test of any system's viability over the long term. If it can't deliver on this for the majority of its citizenry, it will fail one way or another. You can't grow or even sustain a population without it.

The difference is that government is designed to protect everyone - you as a citizen are supposedly a stakeholder and supposedly have a voice.

There are a lot of problems with this, but if you get rid of it then the next day, Blackwater will re-create the IRS and you'll be right back in the same place you were, but with no opportunity to vote.

There's an element about libertarianism which is absolutely right: Planned economies fill up with corruption and eventually collapse under their own weight. There is no known way to run an economy except by giving people freedom of property ownership and contract.

You keep straw manning me with this idea of wanting a government corporation or some weird idea that makes no sense. Read some hope or something to at least understand what i'm arguing about. Probably should not arguing tonight either since i'm not fully articulate (had some bad shit happen today)

Well also a lot of the institutions that libertarians rail against - such as regulation and social welfare programs are also areas where corruption collects and drags a society to the ground. So there is a lot to learn from libertarianism.

I'm not denying that at all, I think the state needs to be a powerful institution which rips out corruptions wherever it's found and punishes it in a very public and brutal fashion.

Not all corruption is grift. When you have like a food safety board and it fills up with risk averse, they will pass increasingly stringent food regulations with the best of intentions but the net effect of this is start-up companies cannot get the licenses and mega-corporations slowly begin to monopolize. But nobody in this story is really "punishable" in the sense that they acted with malice.

In fact, If we are to continue with the democracy meme in some fashion, I think there should be a whole separate elected branch of government which exists to do nothing but audit, investigate and generally just give a hard fucking time to the rest of the organs of the state.

@Hoss @cjd @prettygood The smaller the states, the better the cultural pressure works. If a town is its own governing body shit would work much better (this is why i was talking about size of a state)

I also agree, when regulation becomes overbearing it's often "corruption" that actually ends up freeing the system. This is exactly how Daley Sr. and his Chicago machine built the city up from nothing. I'd highly recommend Boss by Mike Royko if you've never read it, I find Daley Sr. to be one of the most interesting political figures in American history because while he can be fairly characterized as unabashedly corrupt, he also built a helluva lot way faster than he should've been able to.

      > when regulation becomes overbearing it's often "corruption" that actually ends up freeing the system

Oh, let me be sure we're using the same definition: For me, "corruption" means "when the thing changes so that it no longer works as designed" - exactly the same concept as data corruption. It's a superset of grift which is unethical behavior.

So the over-regulation itself is "corruption" of the regulatory system, and then people bribing officials to be able to get things done is grift which is further corruption (though arguably necessary).

      > I'd highly recommend Boss by Mike Royko if you've never read it

Hardly. Me citing an example of a local political boss operating outside the bounds of the larger state (much due to the fact that he had pull with those in the levers of power above him) does not discredit the state as an institution outright.

@Hoss @cjd @prettygood Let me put it this way, on a local level things are much more easily fixable. But not at a state or higher level. Once you start having to many people then nothing happens. This is the other point i was trying to make but i'm a little fucked up. The reason this is important is that every human system has no good way of really "scaling up" when it comes to getting the right things done or even mob enforcement.

My grandpa was a commiteeman in one of the towns surrounding Chicago and this was part of Daley's machine. I heard plenty of stories from my family about business owners paying people off for various things because it got things done faster the going through official channels and having to get middlemen like lawyers involved. That's the sign of a system that's straight up broken, you can't be surprised when the corruption essentially becomes standard operating procedure.

Americans would do well to visit a country such as Switzerland, Taiwan or Singapore where civil service is taken seriously. Because if it's prioritized, it does work a fair bit better than the total mess that is the US Government.

Ah, I misunderstood. Well the nature of civil service is that the pay of a civil servant needs to be modeled based on how critical it is that said civil servant not be corrupted. This means that civil servants in key positions will necessarily command handsome pay, but it also means if they are corrupted they need to be crushed mercilessly under the fist of justice.

Civil service isn't mandatory but it is paid very well and it is considered to be a measure of success as a person to be a civil servant.

If you're talking about military service, that's another thing - which also does help - but arguably public school is doing the same thing, just the US squanders that opportunity as well.

I wouldn't say so, there are states who have maintained a monopoly on violence even in a post-gunpowder world. Yes, it's a force multiplier for one man, but it'd also a force multiplier for the state, so it's ultimately a wash.

I'd agree with that, but I wouldn't say everything brought about from The Enlightenment was good. It was largely a folly of a cadre of very intelligent, high class people who dreamed of an impossible world where every strata of society thought as they did.

Enlightenment thought leaders erroneously assumed the people wouldn't need kings or religion. They hadn't yet evolved their perspectives to the point where they'd understand that all human civilization is comprised to a great deal by a cattle class that has no time for waxing poetic about lofty utopian ideals.

I would say it was good because it created the pretext for the world we have today. Now we're facing new problems, but these new problems are kind of the result of our massive success up to this point...

@Hoss @dcc @cjd @prettygood people are getting swatted for mean comments because if you catch them off guard and have first strike you win

if all you have are machetes and you know the other guy also have machetes and each engagement is a messy fight you'd choose to let live a bit more

It's retarded that police departments around the country haven't got smart to this shit yet. At this point I'd rather we see police departments not respond "appropriately" to the one case where somebody calls 911 after having really decapitated the rest of their family out of the 1000 calls there are bullshit SWAT bait.

In France, getting a phone number requires ID - so anonymous calls are rare and difficult to make. Furthermore, police do not generally break down doors. In fact I've never heard of it happening...

Perfection is an unrealistic goal, one can never make meaningful advancements without being prepared to be wrong - often and in significant ways.

But to the question of whether they improved things, I think the answer is yes, they did, a lot.

@pepsi_man @dcc @Hoss @prettygood as i was talking with a friend yesterday, the economic impact of black/brown criminals attacking white people is enough justification for executions to be applied more frequently.

i'd go farther and say that the big corpos would go belly up if they weren't bribing the western governments all the time (using tax money from the previous round of bribing). MS successfully did that in munich after the city moved to use something linux based for some years. the secret EU pfizer deals are another example. checks and balances don't work, you don't need many people on payroll to completely rig a government like with vaccines or "climate change".

@dcc@annihilation.social The reason why appliances suck is proprietary software. Not exclusive to either government or capitalism. Any authoritarian is guilty of this.
