@inthehands Maybe they didn't "vote for this," but if that's the case, they cynically parroted Dump's lies for the sake of engagement and their own profit. Idiots I can tolerate. That kind of cynicism, no.
Joe #Rogan and all his listeners are welcome to join the anti-fascist coalition. This is how we win. A significant number of people who voted for Trump have to change their minds.
I'm not suggesting that he's forgiven, or that he should be given a position of responsibility, or anything crazy like that. But if that guy is defecting from the #fascist team, I'm not going to say no.
I basically agree with everyone here. I’ll happily accept any genuine hep taking down the cash — that is how coalitions work — and that doesn’t mean I’m trusting or forgiving anyone.
Agreed, though at the same time, we need to have them understand that the road to redemption is not just a matter of hopping the fence. Every one of these mooks whining, "I didn't vote for that!"? They did. They voted for exactly that. They just voted for it to happen to someone else.
We cannot let them whitewash their pasts, we cannot let them just carry on while pretending they're on our side, because that's how they bring their fascism to us. And that's how we lose ourselves and each other.
Note that deciding it’s the wrong time to rub somebody’s nose in how incredibly wrong they were doesn’t make them any less wrong. Listening is not the same thing as accepting. Sometimes it’s a moment to say “you dumbass,” and sometimes it’s a moment to say “And how did that work out for you?” The wise know the difference.
People who were taken in by the likes of these scammers •can• walk out of it in moments of cognitive dissonance — and if you’re in a position to do what Luna describes with someone you know, you might just change a life.
As for the podcasters themselves, who I’m quite sure are not having any kind of moral awakening here but rather are just sensing their market shifting from under them (again, rats + sinking ship):
I’ll happily accept any genuine help taking down the fash — that is how coalitions work — and that doesn’t mean I’m trusting or forgiving anyone.
The reason for my OP here is just that it seems highly notable that these people •do• seem to sense that their market is shifting. I have the strong sense that the MAGA Titanic has already hit the iceberg.
The thing is, the actual Titanic took •hours• to sink; this one could take •years•. The question is how much damage it does on the way down, how much damage we can prevent, how much we can help it sink faster.
@inthehands@corbden I used to understand less and be more wrong. Hopefully I'll keep improving in the future too. Yet I don't *hate* my past self for being comparatively worse than I am now.
So it's hard, but I try to give other people that same kind of grace that I grant to my own past self. I can hope in the future they'll look back on their current selves, and be glad they are better.
