Everything about New York: people, density, buildings, trains, food, size, energy, is just a better fit for my soul ;/

I am posting this as I’m walking through throngs of people at JFK, so I am really a City Person Who Has Missed Cities

@kf don’t mind being hot in the summer and New York is the only place I like being cold in (because I love it so much and my mood is so much better just by being here i don’t mind being cold)

@davepolaschek it’s the only place here that feels like home to me
When I first went somewhere with no people around I was really freaked out. I feel like I was in the movie Get Out in places like that

@skinnylatte And that’s where we differ. A lot. Almost all of NYC is too people-y for me. But hey, enjoy!

I can’t stand crowded places in SF, partly because I dont feel like SF has the right infra for crowds and also the people who show up in crowds don’t know how to be in a crowd and it makes me very annoyed (mostly people from the burbs walking very slowly in Japantown on a weekend)
I feel like I’m among people I know when I’m walking quickly in New York (or Mumbai or Bangkok). The city makes sense. Being in a place that has food from anywhere in the world at any time makes sense to me, and places without that do not, to my brain
I suppose New York City doesn’t make sense to people whose primary world view and mode of the world is ‘need to travel about by car’ but
I probably feel similarly about places where you need to drive to go anywhere (it doesn’t make sense to me at all)

I want to live here. It has been my dream since I was five years old. Maybe in a couple of years I can make it happen.

Did we grow up in the same area? 😅

@douglasvb @davepolaschek as a friend likes to say, most individual buildings in Singapore have a resident population larger than the average town on the west coast
I met someone at work who grew in a population 124 type of place and I was like
That’s one corner of my building, on one floor

@skinnylatte Yeah. I grew up in the country. It was a half-kilometer to our nearest neighbors, who had no children my age.

@andrew773 I like Chicago for a visit, but New York is the only city in this country that feels like a forever home to me. More than SF even. I’m aware of the costs (and am benchmarking against similarly high cost cities)

@skinnylatte Chicago is somewhere between the two. Quality of life is high and expense is way lower. Also more genuine people. Definitely recommend checking us out if you haven't yet.

@skinnylatte @davepolaschek Having everything on the planet at your fingertips must be amazing in a place like that.
I grew up three miles from a town of 10,000 and about 20 miles from the PDX metro area but the hollow that our farm was up made us pretty isolated from the rest of the world. No delivery food. Not even any missionaries. A half mile to the paved road.
Monterey is too built up and dense for me to be truly happy 😅

@douglasvb @davepolaschek I really struggle with Portland because I feel like it’s familiar (infra) but it’s not (so few people)
