@silverwizard This is the traditional way of defending a particular idiosyncrasies. "This is how it's always been done here".

@hypolite Oh I see what you mean

Yeah - it's very weird to see a bunch of people claiming that a thing that's younger than my first fediverse account is an integral part of the fediverse

@silverwizard I don't know if they would defend their moderation decision like I alluded to, but they still are free to enforce this particular rule on their server. The beauty of it is that it doesn't prevent anyone to interact with the rest of the Fediverse.

@hypolite Definitely - I more bristle that there was an admin-announcement that it was a "fediverse tradition" rather than even a Mastodon tradition

@mav @coleens_ Honestly - because the are bad UX, it's hard to divine all the possible things someone might want CWed, an oral tradition of things that *must* be CWed is unmaintainable and will have false negatives and positives, they discourage the use of the useful tools, and they aren't a default so they are easy to forget, especially on a platform for quick thoughts.

Similarly, they don't federate well, PixelFed isn't gonna CW a picture because that's not how it works. And a theoretical FunkWhale post of the song soundcloud.com/user-310458959/… ain't gonna do it either.

In the end, Mastodon has worse safety tools than twitter, because it puts all its eggs in the CW basket, leaving the Poster to predict all possible harm, rather than advertising and building traditions around blocklists, mutes, filtered words, and more!

@coleens_ I'm not sure why CWs are bad. Enlighten me?
