@starlabssystems I hate all these stupid "FOSS" laptop companies, especially Framework. None of them are better than a random Lenovo or Dell laptop. They're mostly just whitelabel laptops they buy from other companies. They cost way more, you get way less. The "value" of a Framework laptop is mostly fictional, an expensive gimmick.

At least System76 did some extra stuff with Intel ME cleaning, but I suspect they don't even do that anymore. Who wants an Intel CPU anyways. I've never heard of anyone doing an "AMD PSP Cleaning".

what? You mean with a Framework laptop? I don't know what you mean.

@crunklord420 @starlabssystems It actually all depends on whether they use the same binding interface between screen-lid and keyboard-base.

The Framework 13 has a decent UEFI menu and is easy to repair, but it doesn't really have the best thermals. It's not the worst laptop as far as throttling goes (the Lenovo X1 Carbon with the 11th gen Intel chip takes the prize there), but it comes in second.

@crunklord420 @starlabssystems I don't get why you have to get a Linux computer in the first place. It's not 1999 anymore and literally any random laptop will work with your favorite distro or whatever

Purism should be F tier since they are a scam shop that wouldn't be in business if they didn't steal customer's money:

@PunishedD @starlabssystems Framework will never ever become cost competitive. They will continue to sell "expansion cards" containing $5 off the shelf chipsets for $40.

@crunklord420 @starlabssystems The idea of Framework is great, but they needed mass volume to make it worthwhile. Cheap easily replaceable parts are the gimmick, but their parts aren't compellingly cheap.

Having a laptop where you can swap in an Ethernet port or more storage without soldering is cool, and maybe $40-$45 is reasonable for that. But not when you're starting with a $1300-$1700 laptop. Framework needed to hit like 10-20% market share and drop their prices hugely, become true commodity vendors instead of a boutique.

@crunklord420 @starlabssystems Yeah, not unless they're selling millions of units per month. Those cards should be down around $10, they should be commodities sold by multiple vendors like the old days of "IBM compatible" competition.

An 8x markup would be fine if the base laptop cost $200-300, but they don't.

@Zergling_man @starlabssystems I'm not sure what I'm meant too add - although I can point out that most of those companies make no effort to support GNU/Linux - some rather do their best to sabotage the execution of GNU/Linux.
