I haven't heard those words in that order before, but yep, if you look at the calendar there are Gen Z adults since ten years ago.
I haven't yet quite come to term with us millennials being adults. Neither have the boomers.

  @piggo 16-year-olds would be born in 2009, which is firmly within the end range of Gen Z according to anyone's definition.
  Gen Z are people who mostly have Gen X as parents. Gen Alpha are people who mostly have Millennials as parents.
  I'm an elder Millennial or rump-X with an elder-Alpha kid who is already almost my height, but thankfully not my width.

  To be honest, most operating systems should have been shipping with a software repository.
  Specially since malware distributed on the web has been a thing.
  Repos reduces the amount of random third-party installs (which should still be allowed on most computers) that most people can't verify and even if they could, humans have a pretty small verification bandwidth.
  
  But sadly Google Store (no idea about Apple Store) is complete garbage at preventing malware.

  Because modern GUIs are anything but tools, it's like if you'd try to buy a power drill and adjusting the speed & torque would be in a menu somewhere.

  @mangeurdenuage @clacke @piggo @lanodan @sun When you work with these people, a lot of the reasons why every "desktop" app is seemingly dumbed down into it's most primitive form taken from mobile and why everything is a webapp masquerading as a native application suddenly start to make sense. It has to be very simple and work/look exactly the same on all platforms (including browsers), because kids and young adults wouldn't be able to use it. It's too confusing for them.
  
  And the exception to this dumbing down rule is professional software like CAD, video editing,...

In ~2018 I was able to find multiple ROMs for my Xiaomeme phone on XDA Forums, but fast-forward to 2023 and the whole Android ROMs scene migrated to random Telegram channels. And no, I'm not downloading my OS from some random Indian on Telegram with zero ways to verify shadiness. At that point it's either get spied on by the Chinese and Google, or give some rando across the globe effective RCE. On XDA you could at least check the user's previous threads and ROMs.

  Here I'd argue it was the extreme bootloader locking issue. It's like console modding, you need this very specific phone if you want it to work on your carrier with the IMEI whitelisted, unless you use T-Mobile. The problem is, your cheap prepaid MVNO is not T-Mobile.

  This is a bootloader lock, not a carrier lock. Let the Verizon rep explain it to you.
  
  At this point, there is no reason not to buy an iPhone. An iPhone from 2019 will get updates for longer than a Samsung from 2020, which was abandoned in 2023.

  @lanodan @clacke @piggo @sun Apple is pretty good at it, since you have to show them the source in order for them to list your app I think. There's at least some verification of the app. Google does basically nothing besides asking for your signing keys and your full name.
  
  Windows Store is also a wasteland of garbage apps filled with ads. You won't find almost anything useful there.
