@cnx @Jain @xarvos Given no mainstream smartphone is a Unix: Linux kinda but basically just software-wise, BSD nah it's way too stripped to be just called "BSD" (which also hasn't been a thing since the 90's, last one was 4.4BSD). :blobcathug: likes this. -

@cnx @Jain @xarvos @lanodan "smartphones" are configured to be restricted to stop you from using them as a computer.
Android phones runs Android, although they happen to use the kernel, Linux, but lack GNU, thus they suck.
iOS is not a BSD OS, although parts of it was copied from BSDs. -

@anokasion @cnx @Jain @xarvos @lanodan BSD's use weak licenses, thus proprietary software businesses just take it (and half the time don't follow the license and don't include the copyright notice and nothing happens) and usually never give any donations (or a pitiful amount) and usually don't even publish the direct modified source code.
I've only ever seen apple give $5 to a BSD (which one I don't remember), but only because an employee donated and apple had a donation matching arrangement.
Occasionally such businesses contribute something to upstream, but that's just to save them a bit of work, as maintaining their out of tree proprietary patches is easier if some of the non-important changes are up-streamed. -

just asking, isn't this with the consent of the BSD devs? same with Darwin (Mac OS X)? they get in return some funding by Apple? -

@lanodan @cnx @Jain @anokasion @xarvos He can't see this, but there is no "the BSD license" - there is the 4-clause, 3-clause, 2-clause, 1-clause and 0-clause - all different licenses.
