    russian is a funny language most of the words are very different from other european languages except sometimes there's a random straight french loanword but spelled weird

      English is probably so bad because of the French influence.

      @lanodan most languages have mostly phonetic writing actually. french and english are atypical in the sheer chaos of it all

      @Paradox @chjara That said as a Breton it could be real fun if british were to shift even more towards Welsh or Scottish.

      @Paradox @chjara The 1990 one? I think it's stuck at being non-canonical french but I'm not sure.
      Plus well I think I'd rather follow french standard from like Belgium.

      @Paradox @lanodan it's more convergent evolution of having a complete mess happen to the sounds (great vowel shift) and never having a spelling reform

      Didn't French literally have a spelling reform and a whole damn conference on proper usage?

      @Paradox @lanodan i mean yeah french has had a spelling reform and it did make some of the things better (oignon -> ognon, clef -> clé), but honestly at this point it's just removing the whimsy while doing nothing to the overall awfulness so this is a 1990 spelling reform hate account

      @chjara @novenary @Paradox onion at least would have made sense as it's more straight-forward orthography.
      Meanwhile ognon… what, I mean it works but it's like they had a limited budget on [aeiou], which makes no sense as it's from 1990 so lead printing press isn't the norm.

      @chjara @novenary @Paradox True, that said for oignon as it's pronounced at least to me there's an unwritten i after the gn, so I'd argue it's not o·gn·on but o·(g)n·ion

      @lanodan @novenary @Paradox well gn is the way to write the palatal nasal in french. as it turns out oignon is just a leftover of when ign was the grapheme for that instead and while most instances of it got changed to plain gn (montaigne -> montagne for example) oignon kept ign. so it's a regularization of that specific bit
