@BowsacNoodle@BroDrillard Finished; it’s not a whole lot different from the current situation, tbh. Stories about “uploading consciousness” and/or “teleportation” vis-a-vis remote atomic reconstruction imply the same sort of faith in “perspective transferrence”, ie that one’s User-Experience stems from and depends upon a particular arrangement of material things. That this is not at all well established creates the dramatic tension; for consciousness itself is very poorly understood — and anyone aware of this, necessarily holds doubts that either of these processes really work as intended.
@BowsacNoodle@BroDrillard It’s similar to ”today”, in that many people believe, whether for good or bad reasons, that their departed loved ones may potentially still “be out there”, and influencing irl events in such a way as to make their presence known.
@Sulla_Felix@KingOfWhiteAmerica@BroDrillard Star Trek TNG has a fun episode with the Riker teleportation clone. The transporter bounced off of the atmosphere and couldn't removenor detect Riker on the planet because of some kind of storm interference. Of course it's a materialist perspective, which their transporter machines have to operate on to exist, but it was neat. I don't think spirits operating a machine is accurate enough, and there's a large element of who we are that is what we are. Organ donation is the wildest example of this. >In addition to changes in preferences, some recipients describe new aversions after receiving a donor heart. For example, a 5-year-old boy received the heart of a 3-year-old boy but was not informed about his donor’s age or cause of death. Despite this lack of information, he provided a vivid description of his donor after the surgery: “He’s just a little kid. He’s a little brother like about half my age. He got hurt bad when he fell down. He likes Power Rangers a lot I think, just like I used to. I don’t like them anymore though”
@KingOfWhiteAmerica@BowsacNoodle@BroDrillard Yeah, there is a very interesting - and old - conversation about all this, mostly based in trying to understand Christian resurrection.
The old dualistic idea - that you are your soul wearing a meat suit - is clearly incompatible with Christian teaching, though it is the driving force behind all the tranny excitement of the last decades. I think it might have been Locke who came up with the conjecture that you are your data, which has been seized by the tech bros in their attempt to defeat Death by uploading their data somewhere.
I guess it is true that every debate is a theological debate.
@Sulla_Felix@KingOfWhiteAmerica@BroDrillard I accidentally left out the spookiest part of the last story... >Subsequently it was reported that his donor had died after falling from an apartment window while trying to reach a Power Ranger toy that had fallen onto the window ledge. After receiving his new heart, the recipient refused to touch or play with Power Rangers [8].
