I hope you’ve enjoyed your weekend, fedi.

For those of you here on NAS, I have a poll or two coming up later this evening.

In the interim, please consider and answer the following:

What single improvement have you made to your house/apartment/lifestyle that has paid the greatest dividends to your quality of life?

Please exclude answers like “kids” or “family”, as (at least here), those answers should be a given.

    What’s your greatest improvement?

@djsumdog I need to figure out the fiber classification and connector situation at some point (STP? MFP? I don't even recall the acronyms). I'm a little worried to run 300' of Ethernet, something that's been on my list for a while, out of fear of lightning, even if it's shielded & grounded cat6a.

Multi-mode cable with LC connectors. The switches and NICs are all cheap these days. I'd recommend MikroTik switches and 10GTek network cards and transceivers (most of their cards use Intel chips).

I have some QNap switches, but they're very picky about which transceivers they'll work with. Would not recommend.

You can get standard wall outlet keystones for LC connectors. I've got three cables running everywhere: 10Gb fiber (primary), 1Gb Ethernet (backup), 1Gb Ethernet (CCTV for PoE cameras, not Internet routable).

      anything new should be singlemode

You mean for long site-to-site connections, right? All the cheap NICs and switches you find online for home use are LC/LC multimode (orange cables being OM1, blue cables being OM3 or OM4). I accidentally got a single mode yellow patch cable and discovered the hard way they're not compatible. 😅

@eriner @djsumdog someone once explained to me the names of fiber connectors by what they do
ST, stick and twist, very rare these days
      SC, stick and click
      LC, little click, most common
and then there's the angled connectors that are either SC/APC or LC/APC. they have a little bit of an angled face to reduce reflection and are mostly used on GPON stuff for internet service. these are always green, and will get fucked up if you plug angled stuff into not angled stuff.
the only types of fiber that really matter at this point are singlemode and multimode. yeah you might find some old orange multimode with the 62.5 micron core instead of the newer teal 50 micron core but in my experience the core mismatch isn't likely to cause enough attenuation to cause problems. anything new should be singlemode, we only ever used multimode because the laser optics for singlemode used to be expensive, now they're maybe a couple bucks more at most. singlemode is usually yellow, but sometimes dark blue and often in a black jacket for outdoor use. multimode LC connectors will usually be tan, singlemode will usually be dark blue.

as for lightning protection, there's this nice motorola manual for communications site design with whole chapters about grounding and surge protection: https://www.blm.gov/sites/blm.gov/files/Lands_ROW_Motorola_R56_2005_manual.pdf

Well direct lighting is going to fuck up anything. What surge protectors are designed for is nearby charges from lighting that momentarily increases current on the line without direct contact.

I also knew network admins who would coil up cables if they came from another building, about 5~10 times. The idea is coiling can dissipate some small surges, although I'm not sure if that actually worked of it was magical thinking.

@mhjohnson @djsumdog yeah but even with those gas disconnect surge protectors, it can arc right across that and toast everything on the other side.

Basically, if lightning strikes you're fucked. You can stack layer on layer of grounding and attempt to mitigate it, but ultimately you can't overcome the wrath of God.

You do what you can, then you pray.

      @eriner
Yeah - lightning can be a big problem with long runs. A sort of close strike can cause 1V per foot of voltage on a line. At 300 feet that would be 300 V. Not good w/o lightning protection (cheap if you buy it ahead).

no one buys a tool. Those things are like $5k~$10k, and come with like a cleaving tool and you have to be careful not to get glass splinters in your hands 😬. The only people who terminate their own fiber are people who run cable for a living.

@eriner @djsumdog most people I know just buy XX foot fiber patch cables an bury them in conduit, lot cheaper than buying connectors and a tool

@eriner — we made two big changes in 2022. First we left the corporate and suburban rat-race in Denver and retired to a hobby farm in the Missouri Ozarks. Then we started regularly attending the local Orthodox Christian church.

Although we’re now quite poor money-wise compared to our previous life, we’ve all never been so healthy, happy, and had such a solid community of neighbors and friends.

The dark times in 2020 motivated us to seek a more meaningful life and, by God, it worked! :D
