@rher I got one but it's only $22 an hour for a night shift position. I'll take it for now because I'll go broke otherwise, but being forced to take a $6/hr pay cut just because of my last jobs corpo HR bullshit has got me suicidal.

@rher I'm actually kind of concerned because they seem quite a bit disorganized and amateurish and the last time I worked in a place like that, I was there for three days before I quit. I don't have the luxury to be able to do that this time. I am going to another hiring event at a place that pays a little more next week though, so I can only pray that goes well enough that I don't have to work this job.

@rher I don't mean to be insensitive complaining about this sort of thing to someone who is currently unemployed, btw. I'm not trying to sound entitled here, because I'm grateful that I can actually (hopefully) pay my bills and not have to move back in with my parents at age 27, but the whole job market is really dogshit right now.

Not at all. In some ways being employed at a bad job is worse than being unemployed. The factory thing didn't work out btw, I'm going to enter my hobo arc soon

I've had all my past job applications to fields where my degree and experience is directly relevant and without fail these people close the positions within a month.

@Turdicus @rher I posted about it before, but this current job I'm working had over 500 applications submitted. They're hiring one, MAYBE two people for this position. That's insane. Probably a lot of migrants applying looking for work visas, probably a lot of automated applications and AI-generated resumes, etc. The only reason I even got called at all was because my sister's husband works for their corporate division and he said something to their recruiter for me.

The trains communicate with the control towers by shortwave. You can just tune in. As long as you jump off before you enter a yard the yard dogs won't get you.

@rher I keep thinking about going hobo but tbh I don't think I'd make it very long at all. Riding a train up north could be neat, but I don't know how to tell which trains are going where.

@rher @Turdicus Saw a post a while back that said basically something along the lines of "ESLs are going to get hired over people born here that speak fluent English because the language barrier effectively makes the ESLs retarded. If something gets fucked up, they can pin it on the spic and he can't really do anything about it because no hablo ingles. They can turn off safety features on machines, train them in unsafe ways, etc. and when an incident happens, they can say Rodriguez violated policy or whatever. Meanwhile he doesn't even know what he did wrong."

That's rough but it makes sense. Some of the foundries in my hometown have started hiring only H1Bs and it's not because they can wrangle billets any better.

@rher @Turdicus Yeah there's also tax incentives and shit too I think. It's just wild to think that people that get fired from every job they get have an easier time finding another job than people with a good track record. I can only imagine how fucked I would be right now if I stayed a comp sci major when I first went to college.

2030 is going to be a really nasty crunch time, most of the boomers should die off by then, and the rest will be gone by 2033.
