@BleachWaffen@graf Gentoo's not bad if you can stand the tooling. I like CRUX and Slackware. But never forget: they are all guilty of being Linux. None of them are free of sin.
> macs are mistake
I don't know why you are mentioning this. Do you think I was suggesting a Mac? Do you think I am using a Mac? get_in_the_unix_room.jpg
@meeper@BleachWaffen@graf That is an excellent question. I think you have to just get some cool software together and invite your friends to your computer lab.
@p@BleachWaffen Gentoo's issue is autism. The decision to give every available option for every package ever a flag you can enable, disable, globally forbid whatever is just too much for some people. I chose Gentoo in 2005 because I wanted to learn Linux not windows on a Linux kernel. I started with Caldera OpenLinux 1.3 in the 90s. I used mandrake (then mandriva). I was installing progeny which was a debian based distro as planes were hitting the towers. The vast amount of my system administration knowledge came from running Gentoo. One of my best irl friends I met on poast also runs Gentoo. It's a learning curve but it's one you will take with you for every distro you hop
> The decision to give every available option for every package ever a flag you can enable, disable, globally forbid whatever is just too much for some people.
I really want to mention /usr/share/config.site whenever I think about USE flags. Most setups already have a thing that can configure things globally.
> The vast amount of my system administration knowledge came from running Gentoo.
Yeah, absolutely: if you set up Postgres on Ubuntu, you have learned Ubuntu Postgres. Better distros don't do this kind of thing.
Also one of the reasons I think people should do LFS at least once in their lives.
> I started with Caldera
Oh, man, ha. So I started with Redhat 5.2, then Slackware 7. Eventually got a 64-bit CPU and then found out that most distros didn't support it. (I wasn't going to run fucking Suse.) I ended up using Gentoo to bootstrap a 64-bit LFS system, which started to get crusty so I eventually used that to build a 64-bit CRUX ISO. Then, you know, computers proliferating, nobody just has one computer. It's almost all CRUX now.
I think a Gentoo fan would appreciate CRUX, but I also think, like...it's Linux. As long as there's not too much fluoride, it's fine.
Tbh they are smart and reasonable people, just the bullshit (parrot)english medium education, and the utter lack of resources or technical education in the normal languages means, they are quite stunted when learning anything technical.
They could learn through passive learning but since microsoft techsupportism has until recently completely damned the software industry to utter normieism.
With a decent few folk finding there way to the goods parts of the internet we do now finally have some people with a reasonable understanding, but this happened too late and still it's all in anglo.
Anyway remember pajeets were a deliberate manufacture by the anglows and it was a product of completely uprooting society forcing stupid beurocratic measures and le westerneducationaboos on a people who don't even understand well at all
> They could learn through passive learning but since microsoft techsupportism has until recently completely damned the software industry to utter normieism.
This is why the computer lab is necessary. We can live in that world. We can build that world.
@p@BleachWaffen The Gentoo install image is what I've used almost 100% of the time when somebody asked me to fix x distro. Ubuntu, whatever. Sysrescuecd used to be based on the Gentoo install cd image. Gentoo will always have a major place in my heart. Like Slackware for you
> Computer Labs in our college are the usual Bill-pozzed crap.
You keep telling me that the earth is a terrible place. I know that so I keep saying we have to build the good shit ourselves.
I am going to have an empty room, and in this room I will put an 8-port ethernet switch, some power strips, and a big-ass table. There will be a drawer with maybe working or maybe broken uSD cards and screws of various sizes and a tray where the screws could theoretically be organized. There will be a BOOTP/TFTP server for machines that can PXE themselves to life. There will be a NAS and a portion of its space will be dedicated to providing a disk with read-write access and no password.
This is a goal that I think I can achieve; I have done it before. (Except the PXE stuff is a pain in the ass to set up so I didn't have that for a long time.)
for consumer hardware, I actually think mac is great. They are the most privacy forward of the options (though they keep all your shit for their own purposes) BUT AT LEAST THEY DON'T SELL OUT TO ADS.
> They are the most privacy forward of the options
Like hell. If the options are "Microsoft, Apple, or Google" then maybe, but if those are the only options, we won't be having this conversation because I will not live in that universe.
@p@BleachWaffen I'm the bottom left label about almost any distro. I used Slackware directly after Caldera OpenLinux 1.3. I remember LISA was used in Slackware then. It was basically ncurses based installer. Fuck man, take me back. I'd be happy if we had more traffic on IRC even. Maybe I should focus on that
@p@Tony@BleachWaffen In his defence apple will argue in court to protect your privacy from everybodu but apple. That's the only thing they have in my interests. M4 max MacBook battery screams too. 14 hours on low power mode
@Tony@BleachWaffen@p Macos is Unix. Apple spent an absolute fortune paying for UX designers to make it as easy as possible to use. Their hardware is superior and you pay that premium but that's where the luxury ends. Macos is not good. It's not intuitive even for normies. Millennials are apples cash cow. Zoomers only (barely) care about iPhones.
Barrier to entry is a good thing. Gatekeeping is necessary. Gentoo and other similar distros force you to get good. This is what you should want. Not set and forget bullshit like ubungu
System76 makes some of the best, well built quality machines you can buy. If they can perfect ARM like apple did and I can get 14 hours on a charge even playing games, I will never buy another macbook system76.com
@XaetaCore@BleachWaffen@p Our instance and most of the rest of our hardware runs on Gentoo btw. Compilation is done via distcc across our entire cdn. Very cool to watch tbh
I'm just a painter man. I spent the last ten years painting walls and sanding drywall. I'm so far removed from "tech" half the time idk what you guys are even talking about lol.
exactly. I don't worry too much about it. I learned how to read technical manuals a long time ago and software is just a bunch of that. It's like being a boiler operator but less dangerous. I like it honestly. I'm used to reading building code books and arguing with city officials about it. Doing software stuff is so much easier omg.
Well im licensed to build commercial buildings (don't hire me it's a bad idea and i talked my way into it) in my current state. But I'm not technically "licensed" to do shit in software. I only know what works and what looks like its gay and too complex or steals your data.
@Tony@graf@BleachWaffen I keep forgetting you're not a computer situation guy. Okay, ignore me sounding crabby earlier; the context is that all of the things a non-hacker believes about computers is wrong and I actually do think that most non-hackers would be happier with a Mac than with a Windows machine, though I would throw the goddamn thing out the window if I had to touch it on a regular basis. soldier_vs._fixer_of_computers.png
@XaetaCore@BleachWaffen@p >Got the pretty cool setup, fully automated plex and funkwhale using slskd and jackett/bit magnet.
Running a plex server in my house with 58T media so far. Funkwhale hides media in your private library if it's even the tiniest bit edgy. I would disable that service personally.
@graf@BleachWaffen@p My setup is a bit cursed, Proxmox with round 15 VMs one of which is a docker host which uses Compose for fediverse and Terraform for everything else.
Got the pretty cool setup, fully automated plex and funkwhale using slskd and jackett/bit magnet.
Load balancer with letsenceypt even a matrix server :D
@graf@BleachWaffen@p hell yeah we got dimilar media setup gor the whole arr stack on it too, i have 100TB raw spread over 2 nassed both woth 4 drives 1 drive failure tollerance each.
One nas is primary the other holds backups. Both have a direct P2P connection on their secondary nic to eachother for maximum backup speed without stressing the net. A Point to Point dish is comming in so i can beam my network to my neighbor appartment across the street cuss his internet is ass cant wait :)
Thats a fair point. Thank you fren. You don't have to respect me, I've had so many nights with me and the construction bros at the strip club you have no idea.
@Tony@BleachWaffen@p I womanized my entire life. You'll come to a point where it's not fun anymore. The thrill was always in the chase. When you get older the thrill is keeping one happy. God bless you Tony ☝🏻🙏🏻
@Tony@BleachWaffen@p You're on the right path brother. Stop giving whores online money every week and I will probably learn to respect you. You can do better than whores online brother
@p@fsebugoutzone.org@BleachWaffen@clew.lol@graf@poa.st What is wrong with you people? I'm typing this on a Mac, my instance runs on a Mac and my Gemini capsule is hosted on an iPhone! Macs are the best thing since sliced bread… Because sliced bread isn't that great, I hate it!
And Gentoo is the Ubuntu of building things from source. "It offers flexibility" is a false statement, they've been playing us for utter fools! It builds fine only on for a couple of most popular architectures and only with the default USE flags — change any of that and find out it's broken and won't build, ALWAYS! With Gentoo you're getting the same thing you would with a binary distro plus a bonus burning sense of elitism.
And if you want to hack on things, you can do it with any distro, Debian included: use "apt-get build-dep very_cool_electron_discord_client" to download build dependencies "apt-get source very_cool_electron_discord_client" to download the source itself alter the build flags apply a shady patch you've found on Reddit put your favourite "CFLAGS=-O3 -march=native -mtune=native" into global buildflags.conf and do "dpkg-buildpackage -uc -us"
@XaetaCore@BleachWaffen@p Sounds chad. Let me know how it works out. We bought some ubiquiti hardware for poast but I've never used the beam forming shit assuming that's what you mean. 15km range is crazy
@nyanide@BleachWaffen@Tony@p Yeah this is the first I've read about that. Would be interested in reading some but that would be him doxing himself. I believe it though. Home improvement boomer types are super vindictive and spiteful
@Tony@BleachWaffen@p Good to hear brother. Antifa types thought posting my dox they farmed from 25 year old phonebook records and going to my ex who has a poast accounts Facebook profile and combining the info was a major discovery and win but all it did was cement that I was doing the right thing. We will be here too. God bless
@Tony@BleachWaffen@p@nyanide Tbh the dox thing was relieving for me because I was wondering what the hell I would do if we ever got kind of popular. The dox article is why I have my gf. Why I was comfortable meeting so many people from here. It was definitely good for me and I have no issue with it at all now besides the fact dramaniggers ended up swatting my 70+ year old mother trying to inconvenience me
That's honestly my only concern. I don't want my family bothered. If i got doxxed i'd just double down and become twice as annoying. My painting shit is really covert in the sense it's near impossible to wreck my reputation because it's commercial and not public info so it wouldnt affect my income. But if anyone doxxes me I'll just double down and get more annoying. lol
@p@fsebugoutzone.org@BleachWaffen@clew.lol@graf@poa.st It's not particularly bad, their bug tracker is an indispensable source of PowerPC-specific patches and there are a lot of cool people using and maintaining it, who know why a particular version of clang is broken. But they would be just as knowledgeable were they using MS-DOS and ^^^^THIS is what absolute most people on Fedi are using Gentoo for. One day they grow up, find inner peace with system32doubled and switch to OpenSUS(, they forget about their teenage LISP efforts and start making moneys on implementing LLMs in Node.js 😈). No, it is impossible to use a distribution that has NetworkManager. Not if the software you're intending to hack on is very_cool_electron_discord_client Without it, there's a high enough chance that it won't build anyway 😏
The irs is already in my dms and they are a lot scarier than a tranny. lol. I've already lost of that front, the fed knows who I am. As long as i pay my taxes and don't break those laws we good. The trannies are just noise.
bro you have no idea. I did some business and some things. Those niggas have been after me since 2019. I have quarterly calls with them. It's over. I have to do clean business now or else...
Well what that means is once i incorporate clew, it'll be legit because it has to be. We will have bank accounts, credit, and a legit business that pays its taxes because we have to. So we can't be taken down by trannies crying. The irs cars about payments not your feelings.
A flawless defense against a large number of internet regulations is not being any sort of business. FSE doesn't even take donations: it is impossible to construe FSE as a business. Most of the laws regulating the internet apply only to businesses.
This means a lot of things do not apply. FSE is a website, I have a website. That's all.
I mean thats fine but what are we doing here man? Idk, im having a lot of fun with this platform and a i love the community. or are we hear to just do free work forever in the shadows?
Sure, i guess. I'm going to detach my personal info from clew and then give them the info of the people who reported the instance and let them go nuts.
For no other reason than I dislike authority and dont respect it.
I just think there is something bigger her between all the admins and me, personally, i'm willing to shovel shit.
@graf@XaetaCore@BleachWaffen@p their wifi stuff is cheap and good quality, easy to configure either attach to a controller or configure in standalone mode
