It's ok to block people and servers on the Fediverse without loudly threatening them first. Just jump straight to the part where you block them.

@evan I prefer to be informed before people block me. Sometimes I'd like to apologise, and even if I don't I'd like to know where I crossed the line.
I try to follow that principle when I consider blocking others.

@mpjgregoire Interesting. I see it more as a threat -- "stop talking about this topic or I'll block you!" And I think that's usually hard for people to comply with.

@evan that’s kind of analogous to the people on Facebook that tell everyone they’re leaving the group. In one group I saw “this is not an airport, you don’t have to announce your departure.”😁

@wjmaggos @mpjgregoire I think there are plenty of cases where a block could be used without harassment. Some people really don't like commercial activity on the Fediverse, for example. Or not using content warnings for news, food, etc.

blocks should be about harassment imo. it should be pretty obvious why you're blocked if we follow that policy. and any further interaction is probably just gonna make things worse.
if I follow you and it's something you said but I wasn't tagged, an unfollow should suffice. and maybe then telling them why you don't want to hear about that makes sense.

@evan Unless it's just a personal block. In which case it's entirely up to you.

@light right. You don't have to tell people you don't like cat pictures and that they must immediately cease posting cat pictures or risk your permanent and irreversible block. You can just block them, and you and they can go on living your lives.

@evan Mmm. You should confirm they violate your federation policy in some way.

I don't think that that's a good feature, specially not without consulting the community of the instance users. -

@RuiSeabra my block button is not a democracy! I do not owe anyone, anywhere my attention.

@evan
Oh, individual blocks are just fine, although temporary blocks should be privileged IMHO. I thought you meant instance-wide blocks! :)
