stop trying to find alternatives to harry potter that are going to just be a lite version of something you loved because you associated it with a specific time in your life and start finding things that appeal to you in your adulthood. stop trying to replace nostalgia with a stand in

you cannot just replace a thing that held a place in your heart because of a time and a place with something else that has vaguely the same shape. your nostalgia comes from the person you were when you first encountered those books.

find something you love now, on the level of the person you are, not the person you were 25 years ago

nostalgia keeps you in the same pot you were in in another life, even if your root system has dramatically outgrown it. repotting is hard and takes work and self love and vulnerability and risk but there is no life without it

@nora I see what you're saying and there are some things that I have absolutely outgrown now and when I've tried to revisit them I was just, not disgusted, but just not moved at all and I knew there was just no room at all for them.
But I wonder if what nostalgia really is is the belief that you were, maybe not a better person back then, but at least that you liked the person back then more than you do now. 1

@nora You remember the good times back then because there just aren't that many right now.

@Fragglemuppet i think knowing you don't have quite the shape of it is very emotionally mature

@Fragglemuppet i also think that working toward something you don't know the shape of yet is very brave and i hope you are giving yourself credit for that

@cwicseolfor @nora Yes, there are also many fandoms that work on different levels, and have different lessons to teach each time around. Some things I think are good to revisit at different stages of your life, and yes, they can also bring healing.

@Fragglemuppet @nora I really appreciated this discussion in all its dimensions. I've been rereading LotR - something I love on different and new levels as an adult, I was a teen reading ahead of the movies last time - and it's been a tumult of unexpectedly keen nostalgia for freedoms and family I've lost since then, and ways I hadn't been cut down by life myself. Who I was.
There's definitely some exercise (as in work) of self-compassion that comes into play.
