@HebrideanHecate@FeartnTired@Haleakalacrater@Lady_Penelope Well, according to the tory scumbags of the time it was about 'shifting wealth from the state to the people'. But really, it was about abolishing social housing. And they've pretty much achieved that now. Council housing still exists, but unless you tick every single box and get the maximum amount of points, you'll die of old age while still on the waiting list.
Case in point, friend has a disability, has kid with a disability, grew up in care, fled domestic violence (all of which gets you more points) and still had to live in refuge (which means she was legally homeless) for nearly a year waiting to be housed. If she didn't have kids, she would almost certainly have ended up street homeless.
@HebrideanHecate@FeartnTired@Haleakalacrater@Lady_Penelope The whole policy was a deliberate attack on working class/poor people. Fewer council houses means more desperate people for private landlords to exploit. And we know that a lot of politicians are private landlords. They are the main beneficiaries of this policy.
@Haleakalacrater@HebrideanHecate@Lady_Penelope social housing for rent owned by councils and housing associations, Thatcher's govt brought in the right for tenants to buy the houses they were paying rent in. At massive discounts. Many sold them on and they got bought by private landlords who are now renting them out at hugely increased rents. Fewer social houses got built because they lost their investment with them getting bought soon after.
Scotland got rid of this some years ago, but whole of UK badly affected in it's wake.
@FeartnTired@Haleakalacrater@HebrideanHecate@Lady_Penelope Fewer houses did get built, but not just because the councils were losing the investment. Councils only got to keep about half of the money from the sales, and were not allowed to use any of it to build more council houses.
@Haleakalacrater Not just women, they've just risen along with the overall. There are hundreds of rough sleepers in Belfast and a huge homelessness/housing list.
Right to buy and lack of new builds has stagnated public housing, but more than anything else a drug and mental health crisis that needs to be seen to be believed.
@HebrideanHecate@Lady_Penelope I’m not familiar with this. Is it buying out leases and putting lease holders out in the street? Maybe it was explained previously but I forgot.
