     @adiz @pwm its a production machine, I can reboot it but like it would involve at least warning someone. I am a pro-reboot type, my own personal servers get a monthly reboot because if shit goes wrong I want to be on-deck when it happens.

     @jae Reset the system/services, clear memory, in my mind keeps the system "healthy" having a clean boot daily. Many problems I've faced in the past have been cleared with a reboot, or were, rather, otherwise, directly or by proxy, the result of the system never getting a reboot. Maybe I should move to weekly reboots as well. 🤷 @pwm @prettygood

     this feels like a redirect to avoid answering a question.

     but okay.

     • if by chance there’s a memory leak, hard to trace when you’re often rebooting

     • if by chance you have a service hanging that won’t exit properly it can potentially cause problems if writing to data source/filesystem

     • if running dbase and transactions are not committed. it’s a problem

     • rebooting clears cache layer of the system, takes a while to rebuild

     • stability is hallmark of linux/bsd systems, take advantage

     so why do you reboot nightly?

     @adiz @pwm @jae @prettygood I had a NetBSD box designed to do exactly one thing running for years without reboots and I had servers that refused to POST/boot again after a reboot due to a hardware failure. Generally I don't bother rebooting unless there was a kernel/glibc update applied which (usually) is the only case on Linux/BSD systems where a full reboot is needed to fully apply an update.

     @jae I guess I've just always grown up with the mentality of teaching that turning off a computer when not in use/rebooting a machine is "good". I will regularly shut down my laptop before extended periods of disuse, or reboot it periodically (like after updates, or moving between OS partitions). @pwm @prettygood

     kernel, parent-pids, and some systemd/init services take care of this for you.
     
     if reboots clear an issue, you lost value of debug / live system condition information to debug things.
     
     it's not a service you're giving to yourself, but whatever works for you.
