When you're considering purchasing a new product or service and you have to think: do I stick with a company that already spies on every other aspect of my life and give them even more of my personal data, or do I go with a whole NEW company who can then spy on my life and get a bunch of my personal data?

Because you know they all will. Eventually.

@JessTheUnstill The only winning move is not to "buy" a product that's actually a disguised subscription to a service.

@JessTheUnstill Then it already is one, if it requires any further interaction with the party who made it after purchase. That's what I mean by disguised.

@dalias Sure, but even stuff that isn't a subscription now could always become enshittified into a subscription later.

@jornane @JessTheUnstill I have light bulbs with no wifi or interfaces of any sort except conductive contacts and mechanical switches.

@dalias @JessTheUnstill I have Philips Hue lights because you can manage them completely locally, as I don’t want a service.

Now the app is nagging me to make an account, saying it’ll be impossible to use the app without the account later on.

@JessTheUnstill @jornane I read the reply I replied to as saying "even if you try to avoid it you'll fail", but maybe that was a misinterpretation.

I think it was more an example of the sort of "hidden subscription" I was trying to get at.

@dalias @JessTheUnstill I meant it as using an app that only communicates locally still is a hidden subscription.

@keira_reckons @JessTheUnstill @dan I have a fossil one with a bigger display and you can set it to display images or notifications. Like this notification that my cat used the litter box while I was out running.

@keira_reckons @JessTheUnstill @dan this is actually a big feature for me as it will set itself automatically as I travel.

Am I seeing it right that it's just a regular analog watch with a little digital window in it?

      Yep!

It doesn't tick though, and you have to set the time through the phone.

@irene @keira_reckons @JessTheUnstill yep! I have not had the chance to try any of the smart watch features in any meaningful way because 2025 has been a mess. But despite that, I have still managed to keep it charged... which I would definitely not have done with something that needs to be charged daily

@JessTheUnstill I really like my Withings one, which I chose because it doesn't have internet connection and the data storage is on my phone or in Europe, and the company is German (GDPR for the win).

It sleep tracks, although I don't know if it's any good at that. And does heart rate and steps and has a timer and a stopwatch.

The heart rate is periodical, not constant, but there may be a setting for that.

It doesn't have the weather though.

But the battery life is ~25 days.

@keira_reckons @JessTheUnstill second the Withings. I just got one for @dan and I think he’s only charged it two or three times since Christmas. I have one of the Fossil hybrid watches. I like watches that have hands and look like watches.

      Priorities: multiple day battery life
Track steps and heart rate and sleep and set a timer
      Able to check the weather

      That's about it really
