I knew #cats could have their blood pressure taken, but it only just occurred me to today to look up photos of it, and they are even better than I imagined.

Not only do they have tiny blood pressure cuffs, they can take their pressure either on their legs or on their TAILS‽

You may not like it but this is what peak coziness looks like.

Actually, you should like it. I don’t know why you wouldn’t like it.

We get bagels from our CSA every week and lately they have been coming sealed in multiple layers of bags, and when I asked about it…

    “We heard Miso steals bagels.”

@synec @jessekelber @jay hmm, I haven't really been to Belltown/downtown much in a while, and a bunch of the places I knew there have closed. But let's see...

    - Shiro's was the canonical Seattle sushi restaurant, at least until Shiro moved to start Sushi Kashiba in Pioneer Square. Both are good choices but I'm not sure how hard it is to get a reservation today.

    - Wa'z is an excellent fancy kaiseki restaurant. Definitely need reservations but I don't think they're too hard to get right now.

    - Lola is a solid vaguely Mediterranean restaurant from one of Seattle's ~3 restaurateurs

    - Matt's in the Market is in the most touristy spot in Seattle and has a great view, and somehow despite that also has really good food

    - there's some good hot pot restaurants in Westlake - Hai Di Lao is a Sichuanese chain (perhaps a lame suggestion since there's at least one in the Bay Area), and Qiao Lin is another Sichuan-style one that I haven't tried but recommended by @skinnylatte

@synec @jessekelber @jay @skinnylatte oh, and since you mentioned shellfish, Taylor Shellfish is the place I usually go for oysters. There's a couple different locations but the Pioneer Square, Lower Queen Anne, and Capitol Hill locations are probably reasonably convenient depending on where exactly you are staying.

(worth checking the menus for specific locations; they all have raw bars but IIRC some of them have more cooked foods than others)

@synec @jessekelber @jay @skinnylatte if you take the light rail to the International District, there's a bunch of good places really close to the train station:

    - Chengdu Memory is my current favorite hot pot restaurant (it feels so authentic I actually caught myself trying not to drink the water)

    - Fort St. George is an izakaya that also serves Japanese comfort food like hamburger steaks (open late, and where everyone working at the other Japanese restaurants goes for a drink)

    - Happy Lamb is a Mongolian hot pot chain from China

    - there's another Dough Zone there too

    - and probably something good in the food court of the Uwajimaya, but I don't remember what's there nowadays

I forgot to mention the worst part here, which is that if your interface name is long enough, and your vlan number is high enough... you can't create a vlan interface named enp8s0f0npf0vf1.1024 because it exceeds IFNAMSZ, glibc's maximum buffer size for an interface name.

Someone recently told me that they knew of multiple people who thought that women only go to CS grad school to find husbands, and there are so many obvious things wrong with that statement, but I want to focus on: wouldn’t… *literally any other option* be better?

@skinnylatte @irene oh! I have a whole theory about abstraction levels in Chinese food names! Let me see if I can remember it...

Level 0: the name of the dish describes how to prepare it (e.g., 回鍋肉, twice cooked pork; 樟茶鸭, camphor-smoked duck)

Level 1: the name of the dish specifies the flavors but leaves the exact implementation unspecified (e.g., 孜然羊肉, cumin lamb)

Level 2: the name of the dish specifies an abstract notion of the flavor only (e.g., 怪味鸡, strange-flavor chicken)

Level 3: the name of the dish conveys only a shared understanding of the subjective experience of eating the dish (e.g., 口水鸡, mouth-watering chicken)

Level n: the name of the dish describes something that could possibly be considered food but, thankfully, is unrelated to the one actually served (e.g., 夫妻肺片, husband and wife's lung slices)

Level ∞: the name of the dish is fully abstract and bears no relation to the dish or any other food (e.g., 佛跳墙, Buddha jumping over the wall; 蚂蚁上树, ants climbing a tree)

One of my favorite things about Sichuan food is that this (delicious!) dish goes by the innocuous name of "water-boiled fish".

    (my homemade version!)

When adopting a new 100GbE switch, it’s important to follow gradual introduction procedures to keep your existing cats from becoming stressed and developing RDMA aggression.

@skinnylatte @irene yes! We have been coming here regularly since they opened, and before that the chef’s previous restaurant

Glad you found it — I would have recommended it but wasn’t sure you were interested in going all the way up to Edmonds.

(Also one of the few places where dropping my name would probably work! Not that they wouldn’t treat you well anyway!)

I am impressed that my favorite sushi bar can still find new fish I haven’t tried, although I’m not 100% convinced they aren’t just making these up with AI.

“Banded jacopever” has to be made up, right?
