oooh 64GB RAM _laptop_ was the recommendation for students? I accidentally brought my Lenovo ThinkStation Xeon 4.00GHz 6-Core 128GB DDR4 Workstation - Doughnut Lollipop 【記録係】:blobfoxgooglymlem:, dilbert 1 and hor32 like this.

@kaia I think it's actually insane for students to buy these high-end laptops and force them to take them to uni. They should have classrooms equipped with workstations that can deal with the workload at uni/school. kaia likes this. -

@kaia Every computer is portable if you provide a power supply, a display, input devices, and a way to move it all around. :blobfoxgooglytrash: kaia likes this. -

@fwc @kaia IBM knows how to make a pretty computer and Lenovo just kept it. The red accent on black looks really good. -

Academia should never have pivoted from mainframe computing. Centralized, managed, secure, and a stable, standardized environment for all students. You should only ever need your own pc for limewire and counterstrike.

@nicholas @kaia That said, I know a high-school that recently tried that approach with a VM server running VMWare's hypervisor with few Quadro GPUs. It could barely handle one classroom using MS Office and web browsers. The latency in rotating views in Solidworks (parametric 3D cad) was seconds. And it took 10 minutes for Solidworks to start. -

@grips @kaia @phnt I am presently enrolled with a 2.6GHz laptop, I can't use IDEs or do dynamic programming for moderate problem sizes but it works well for real stuff. Phantasm and Johnny Peligro like this.
