> we'll make a GOOD star wars movie,
Can't be done.
> we'll throw in a sith lady so pretty that half the reviews for the movie will be UOH EVIL WOMAN SEGGS
...Okay, maybe it *can* be done.

@p @skylar @judgedread -Opening crawl: "First of all, fuck Kathleen Kennedy ..."
-Beginning 25 minutes are just scenes of Leia like slave girls
-15 minute of an almost Mad Max like chase scene involving droids, bounty hunters, sith, and jedi
-"OK, now that we've cleansed the palate, let's proceed with movies based on the Zahn novels."

@Charles_in_Charge @skylar @judgedread I don't know who "Zahn" is. Movies need tits and explosions and big-ass trucks.
The perfect movie (Road House) has already been made, so I don't know why they didn't just pack it up after that. Theaters could just show Road House over and over again.

@p This was literally what Lucas was going to do with his sequel trilogy he was developing in 2012 when he sold out to Disney. The big bad in his sequels would have been Darth Talon, a very popular hot female Sith from the Expanded Universe that Disney promptly decanonized, along with shitcanning Lucas' story treatment for the sequels to invent their own.

@judgedread I don't trust Lucas to do a better job than Disney, but I suppose that's a matter of taste.

@p I think it should go public domain in 2027, as it would have under pre-1977 copyright law.
Then anyone could give it a shot.

@judgedread Oh, yeah; the trees were too kind to Sonny Bono.
-

@p I believe the 1977 revision already extended it beyond 50 years.

@judgedread I thought that the Sonny Bono law was what moved it to 90, but I could be wrong.

@p Oh, it probably was, I am talking about the jump past 50, which is why Star Wars won't be public domain in 2027.
Basically Hollywood suddenly realized their old films were about to become free to watch and turned the screws on their wholly owned congressmen to remedy the situation.
There is no undoing it without a revolution because it would be deemed a taking to render their libraries worthless to them with a retcon.

Ah, okay, yeah. Was not alive in the 70s, so it's like the perspective of Gen Z on the TSA.
> turned the screws on their wholly owned congressmen to remedy the situation.
Yeah, they don't have the juice to do that any more, though.
> There is no undoing it without a revolution because it would be deemed a taking to render their libraries worthless to them with a retcon.
Everyone except Hollywood hates Hollywood, it's been like that for at least ten years. I think you could pull it off. I think you could do it just by threatening to withdraw from the Berne Convention: "don't interfere with making copyright reasonable or we'll immediately put everything you've ever done into the public domain outside the US".

@p @judgedread Why make new ones when they could just keep editing the first 3 forever

@p Not a bad angle. Really, it's all effectively free offshore today anyway.

The converse, that movies from overseas would all get unenforceable copyright here, would be cool (and, added bonus, Crunchyroll dies overnight) but would be less of a worry for movie studios. They don't take anime seriously and no one takes Bollywood seriously.

@judgedread Actually, now that I think about it, Disney paid a lot of money to bury Hayao Miyazaki on this side of the ocean. (Although probably less than it cost them to bury Don Bluth.)

@p I think John Lasseter had benign motivations. Cel animation was done in the US by then anyway.
