Is there a way to drive an EV in California without ever using Tesla superchargers? Assuming I live in a rental with no home charging. Probably too hard?
@drsbaitso that's my sense, but was hoping there was something i am not seeing. my commute is 100 miles away ;) don't go in daily, but it's still a lot.
@skinnylatte I did this in Colorado 3 years ago! I was renting and my housing didn't have charging on site. I definitely think it's doable, especially now and in California.
Will +1 the Electrify America sentiment, but also will add this website is a good resource for figuring out what's around you or on your commute route: https://www.plugshare.com/ (Can filter out the non-Tesla specific Plugs, as in the screenshot)
@skinnylatte The tiny north coast city of Point Arena has a ChargePoint charging station. I think there are various payment apps that probably have maps of locations where they work.
@skinnylatte do you have off street parking at home? California requires landlords to allow EVSE installation, but doesn’t require them to pay for it, so depending on the parking situation and financial feasibility for you, that may actually be a possibility
@skinnylatte I've lived without at home charging and driven from Berkeley / Oakland several times using a Chevy bolt which does not HVDC charge particularly fast. You've got quite a few non Tesla chargers between you and Monterey. if you don't have anywhere at work you can L2 or L1 charge, I still think you could do this. The first couple of times may be a mess as you figure out exactly which chargers are most reliable etc, but there is enough charger density between SF to find a reliable route
@skinnylatte I also suspect if you talk to facilities at work, they can find you a L1 plug to top up turning the days you are at work. I charge L1 rn, and it's workable. You'll be down there generally longer than a day yeah?
@skinnylatte I've done it for abour 5 years renting in SF without a garage. As someone without a daily commute I've found a single Bolt EV charge can last a few weeks, maybe more just to get around town with some small weekend trips perhaps. It's a bit inconvenient sometimes to schedule time to go charge the car for 45 mins at EVGO or Electrify America fast chargers. But I either bring a book, computer, etc and chill.
@skinnylatte We’ve done ~10 round trips LA to SF (101 and the 5) in a Bolt with no Tesla stops. By comparison with the highway stops on that route, the SF metro charging stops have generally been all oversubscribed. I would not want to rely on them on a daily basis. If you have a 100+ mile commute with reliable charging at work that to me implies having a reliable L2 spot near home to add a bit of margin before heading back.
