Mozilla doesn’t need to build any AI things.
All Mozilla needs to do is: make a web browser that is standards compliant and does not adopt any of the nonsense that for-profit companies are doing to try and destroy the web.
Mozilla doesn’t need to run a VPN service, data broker service or anything else.

I just want my money to donate to the development of the browser.

No AI stuff. No cryptocurrency donations. https://hachyderm.io/@joeyh/114078238284059938

      No proprietary plugins. No DRM.

Firefox shouldn’t even have a EULA. Mozilla should be collecting ZERO information from the browser that they cannot collect from httpd logs.

      To quote Mozilla co-founder @jwz

“In my humble but correct opinion, Mozilla should be doing two things and two things only:

      1. Building THE reference implementation web browser, and
      2. Being a jugular-snapping attack dog on standards committees.
      There is no 3.”

@mattl @Dianora @joeyh i wonder sometimes if it might be better if they actually just *sold* it. I don’t mean, to some other organisation, i mean, as a product to end users. Pay a license and get it guaranteed without any of that invasive shit.

I mean, I pay for ivory here, i pay for mimestream, i pay for dash (doc browser), I used to pay for other stuff but i stopped using them. i use firefox way more than any of them…

and it's always open source. you can build it yourself, but most won’t.

Do they still get a ton of money from Google?

@mattl It's passing a lot of test suites with flying colors (and outperforming other browsers!) but the important parts of the browser UX need a lot of work yet. We'll see. I keep watching and waiting. They're claiming they aren't going public with builds until 2026

Then you need to find someone other than Mozilla to give it to. Mitchell Baker and her cronies have turned it into their personal ATM, and sadly I think it's probably stuffed beyond recovery.

I suspect those in the Mozilla community who support the original vision need to do the same thing the OpenOffice community did. When they created the Document Foundation and forked OO to create LibreOffice.

It’s been a while since I compiled Firefox. It’s been almost 20 years since I was compiling what became GNU Icecat and trying to coordinate stuff from the UK with the FSF in Boston and a volunteer in India.

Yes, it will. But figuring out how to make a rights-respecting reference browser, *without* DataFarm money, is something the software freedom community has needed to do for a long time.

That money isn't coming back, and that's a good thing. Accepting it was the poison chalice that got Mozilla into its current position. Most of it was spent on admin and bullshit pivots anyway, not software development.

@strypey mostly I put myself as a human shield between the volunteer and the FSF because quelle surprise an individual with a 3 letter name was insufferable to the volunteer who was doing great work and didn’t need a bunch of bullshit from that person.

      Naming no names.

Kudos for your pioneering work. Intriguing that you mention an Indian volunteer. I suspect that the energy needed to refresh grassroots Free Code development will come more from east than west. I really want to go to FOSSASIA and talk to some people about this.

@mattl have they ever shared how much it costs to maintain the browser? it seems the majority of significantly sized web projects ultimately end up in advertising because they struggle to grow income otherwise?

the piece I feel fuzzy on is whether or not the advertising is a necessary step to keep the lights on, or if it's the outcome of "line must go up infinitely"
