It's the same in Canada. The sweet spot in terms of number of protesters seems to be about 50-100. If you have less than 50 people in the crowd then the police will beat you on account of being a public nuisance. If you have 50-100 people you're just big enough that it's too great a hassle for the cops to easily deal with. If you're more than 100 people, you're a threat and the city authorities will come down on you like an iron jack boot while the MSM all vilifies you in lockstep so the general public will excuse the authorities for doing so. Of course it depends on the cause too. If you're doing some kind of activism that the government condones du jour, then they might turn a blind eye, or even provide union and NGO funding, some photo ops with local politicians, and so on.
also in canada if you protest anything worth protesting, mainstream media will do everything in its power to frame you as violent revolutionaries or terrorists, regardless of how peaceful you are
@sun@Alex@toiletpaper And a big part of it is that the entirety of the mainstream media is owned by rich people who "don't want the Poors to get any ideas." :blobfoxdisapprove:
Even if you're a sovereign unceded first nation who never had a treaty with "Canada Inc.", they will vilify you as terrorists and send the RCMP and private merc's to oust you from your own land.
All while crying "Russian invasion!!" out the other side of their mouth.
@anemone which one specifically are you talking about?
The most notable one to me was the 1999 WTO protests in Seattle, police infiltrators got caught.
More recently I saw declassified video from the Jan 6 thing and, police were kettling protesters, there was a camera at a guarded door blocking people in, multiple people came up to the door and were pushed away but some of the protesters showed something to the door guards and were immediately let out lol
@anemone@sun they do that here for sure. RCMP had a document leaked a couple years back of a bunch of groups they infiltrated and there were some that were local (one a student group where my brother works).
@jeffcliff@shitposter.world@sun@shitposter.world didn't that mass shooter a few years ago that was used as a pretext for trudeau gun ban list have weird gang and RCMP connections + was getting huge amounts of money directly from the post office?
@anemone@sun i missed the post office bit, but we have a surveillance agency (kinda like cia/nsa/whatever) inside of our post office --- it would be like if there was a branch of us postal service that was actually spies on part with the cia/fbi
@sun@anemone Speaking of those protests, I remember being told that I'd get in trouble if I said anything about them back when they were happening (I was in elementary school). :blobfox0_0:
@sun@shitposter.world this one didn’t make the news it was one that happened here in Portland back when I was still in some leftist orgs. Some random guy and his friends hijacked a blm march and the libs just went along with it because he was black.
Anyway some of the leftist orgs figured out who was and he was a convicted child rapist who served no prison time and had some and was part of some community police outreach group?
