seems like this "what did you do last week" is making people lose their minds -

There was a time when it was the managers' job to know what their people do. You know, walk around, talk to people, ask how things are going, what are the problems if any? Now they can't be bothered to do that, they need emails. -

The "agile" stand up meetings suck in a lot of ways, but at least everyone on the team - including a direct manager - knows the outline of what everyone is doing.Bread up, Bro likes this. -

@sickburnbro At my main client, my direct reports are required to give these reports **daily**, and I in turn must report what I and my team did **daily**. It's an annoying pain in the ass, but it's not unreasonable for management to know what you're working on regularly.

@chancey @sickburnbro People will bitch unceasingly about having to track their time and use workflow systems for everything, but it is absolutely necessary to develop an understanding about where resources are being spent
I once had a big-name but small-dollar client that I knew wasn't going to grow into a worthwhile account, but it required an update to our workflow system to really be able to quantify the problem. It was even worse than I had assumed - we spent at least $1.20 for every $1 they paid usBread up, Bro likes this. -

@KarlDahl @sickburnbro
It can be a balancing act - in some organizations, the tracking overhead can become a significant cost center. This gets much worse when management insists on multi-hour incident response calls with dozens of stakeholders, which can quickly burn tens of thousands of dollars of employee time where they are largely idle.The approach of "tell me how it goes" requires trust and direct insight, which is often lacking in big orgs though.

@chancey @sickburnbro Oh, I agree. There is a sweet spot. However, I'll never regret being able to show a company president that an in-person meeting managed poorly by someone I usurped cost us $30k per her own numbers Bread up, Bro likes this. -

@KarlDahl @chancey this is why bean counting is important; but the critical mistake that gets made is to then put the bean counters in charge. -
