  "innovations" since Windows 7:
  
  * EFI and secureboot where Linux won't even install unless it's signed by a cryptographic key provided by Microsoft
  * They're back to updates sometimes blasting away your second OS. This falls into the category of "we're not doing it on purpose but we also don't give a fuck about other os because we have no incentive to and it would take effort"

  @coolboymew @koimoa @weeble @sun @mischievoustomato multiple OS installs are pretty straight forward if you install windows first. because windows tends to vomit over everything, while linux is more precise. after installing windows, you install lilo or grub over the windows bootloader, but i've used the windows bootloader before. it's a little awkward, but doable. although, that was with win7, so i don't know how things have changed.

  gave me deceptive options during install related to tracking
  after install had to go through and uninstall several unwanted applications that were preinstalled and popped up trying to sell me subscriptions
  Started in S-mode, I didn't know what it was yet but it made installing some applications impossible and it wasn't clear why it wasn't working.
  printer and scanner no longer supported, had to help my uncle buy a new one that worked in windows 11

  The problem usually is that ultra convenience always leads to bad things because of sheer laziness. The fediverse takes a bit to get used to, there's some inconveniences, but ultimately, it's so much better than any other big social media, and this is the ultimate prize of being slightly inconvenienced

  @weeble @koimoa @coolboymew @Uraael @mischievoustomato my belief is that most things should be a little hard to use so you activate your brain when you pick it up which stimulates you into figuring it out yourself. what I found was that with tablets and phone the absolute handholding results in complete brain shutoff then simple problems are not even solvable. in other words a little difficulty puts your brain into the right mode.

Some of the comments here are veering off into kind of abusive/derogatory/judgemental regarding device-usage, and I just want to be clear that wanting a box with one big shiny button on it is, by itself, not any kind of failing. You don't know what that person does in their lives that might mean they don't have the resource to sit and troubleshoot bugged code for four hours a day. Other people just aren't that way inclined, and that is perfectly valid. Computer illiteracy isn't a crime, or some societal death-knell. [#Relax]. What bugs me personally is when that becomes obnoxious crowd-pleasing mockery; those people can fuck off. But perhaps if we weren't calling them "retards" and making them feel stupid they'd be less inclined to be like that?
  
  But for your basic 'I just want email that works' person I have no beef with them whatsoever. I have a colleague at work who finds IT use really really hard and it shocked me how little she understood basic concepts, but from her I learned that people with IT skills need to have tolerance for and patience with those that it doesn't come easy to, and not try to berate/guilt them into becoming sysadmins.

  From interacting with young zoomers/gen alpha and having to fix "computer" issues for them, I've soon realized that phones make people that know nothing about computers create "paths" that lead them to an end goal, instead of making them think how you get to the end goal. A similar behavior to elderly people that never learned how to use a computer when they were young.
  
  As a result every action has a path (pattern of actions) that needs to be done and they don't think about the reasoning behind that pattern. They've learned that some other options are hidden behind a hamburger (three dot) menu, but change the location of that button in the app and they are doomed.

  Disagree. There's nothing inherently noble or valuable about tool-complexity. Believing so is an ideological bias.
  
  The whole foundational principle of software is that it makes work easier, allows us to do more than we can do by ourselves. If you're building it with the intent to aggravate users into becoming more capable software users, you're doing it wrong.

  No, but I'm on the same side of this as @sun . It's not that the complexity is good, but that tools are tailored to the person using them and this includes skill level. A chef doesn't use the same tools in the kitchen that I use, and I wouldn't expect most people to use the same software tools I use.

  In your kitchen example you've just said that there is a choice between what tools can be used. A Chef would make different choices than an ordinary cook.
  
  The Chef isn't out there demanding that ordinary cooks use their tools.
  
  That's the point I'm making. You don't need to force people to use complicated tools, just because you find them better for your tasks. Plain, simple tools are fine for those that want them. I'm not saying complicated software is bad - I routinely choose more complex software in my personal life, KDE over Gnome, Vivaldi over Chrome and so on. All I'm saying is there's nothing wrong with software being ABC simple. I hate Gnome's simplicity but Gnome suits people other than me, and that's brilliant.

  No, but a food processor doesn't second-guess you and actively try to prevent you from learning how to use a knife, and people that just cook at home don't shit on chefs for knowing how to use a knife.

  Yep, and Linux can absolutely be that simple for them.
  
  But speaking for myself I'm glad I learned computers when I did (the 80s) because it's helping me learn the more complicated parts of Linux now, which is proving immensely enjoyable.

  I use windows for gaming and art, tho I strip out a lot of the bloat
  I use Linux for maintaining my VPS and other shit
  I have a Mac mini that I use as a desktop
  I have Haiku that I use for DAW stuff
  
  Ain't a perfect OS IMHO they're all ass in their special way but I use whatever gets the job done. I think calling people idiots or whatever isn't gonna convince them to switch to a particular system, they just want what works and that's it
