   I don't understand cheapass #Mac developers who pony up for pricey #Apple hardware but then refuse to pay for the Apple Developer Program to notarize and sign their apps.

   Is it unreasonable to not want to run random code from the Internet on my own pricey Apple hardware?

     You're still running random code. Apple doesn't check the code you sign with a developer key, unless you submit it to their store.

     It's kind sad you think that running signed code protects you in any way. You need to trust the developer, not Apple. You'd get just as much protection if Apple allowed you an easy way to install that dev or company's self-signed cert.

     If you are you concerned about running random code on your Apple hardware you should be running Free Software like GNU/LINUX

     I'm not on Mastodon. I'm on Pleroma. It's okay, I understand. If you don't know what guarantees signed binaries gives you, I wouldn't expect you to understand or know how the Fediverse works.

     @djsumdog I *know* what signing and notarizing enables—it means I can trace the code back to the developer and it can be killswitched if Apple determines it’s malware.

     Apple can decide what runs on it and decide to make it stop working if they will so.
     
     Proprietary software is the antithesis of security, considering you're not even allowed to check it or change it?
     
     If you want any security, first you need to be using 100% free software and then you can start implementing security that doesn't crumble to dust.

     @mjgardner rms finds open source positively antithetical to our movement. I'm not quite that bad, as I see it as mearly a particular development model which may or may not be utilized when producing Free Software. Anyone other than you having a killswitch on software you run on your machine is pretty gross if you ask me.
