What's worked for me is to not waste time with anything that is corpo or looks like a recruiter or uses inhuman phrasing in the job post ("The candidate shall have the following qualities...", etc.).

Further, I won't fill out an online form. I'll call a phone number, preferably, or send my resume directly to steve_lastname@company.com, but I'm not going to start the employment relationship with faceless automated bureaucracy; everything is downhill from the start. If they can't treat me decently in the interview, they're not going to suddenly start after I'm hired.

Most of the apply-by-online-form jobs are fake anyway.

Craigslist, mostly. I don't even have a LinkedIn. It's worked fine for me so far as a software developer, and gotten about half of my jobs. The others were found through friends. Sometimes you can send your resume directly to the CEO or CTO of startups, skipping any go-betweens; I got at least one interview that way.

If you're in a blue collar field, probably wouldn't hurt to just randomly walk up to small businesses and inquire. Social skills are rare these days so people tend to respond positively to someone who is willing be social.

It really does work. Remember, ultimately there's some real human being making the decision to hire you, and more often than not, it's based on whether he likes you or not.

One of my interviews just consisted of me nerding out and reminiscing with the CTO about oldschool 1337 h4x0r shit. He ended it with something to the tune of "I like you. How about $10k more than what you make now?"
