   Capitalism sucks so much that it's tough to even find decent service providers online. I am sickened by people like Andy Yen of Proton (who have had a lot of my money over the years, but not for much longer) spouting "both sides" bullshit, evoking Swiss neutrality tropes with false equivalence between fascists and anarchists, Zionists and Palestinians, and @aral recently reminded me of how the Desmond Tutu quote applies here: "If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor." I'm sick and tired of techbro culture narratives deliberately disconnecting tech liberties from civil liberties and freedom.

     The challenge is in finding those service providers worth using. It's all fine being focused on privacy and green tech but not cool when some of the very same providers are anti-union or adherent to their country's laws that suppress Palestinian voices. This is like a fucking riddle to solve, set by Edward Nigma himself (tech villain that he is!) I'll follow up with my findings.

     I will add that it's not all doom and gloom - there are companies like Vivaldi and Signal doing some really cool shit. But the fact that they are few and far between is a sad indictment.

     @worik That's not quite what this is. I think Signal's Meredith Whittaker sums it up effectively: the technology should be private and secure for all, yes, but the ethos should never hold a neutrality between freedom and fascism. The very principles of such tech and civil liberties are in opposition to fascism, and just as Meredith Whittaker has, we should all champion opposition to fascism. Expressing "neutrality" is, after all, simply supporting the oppressor.

     There is room for disagreement about political philosophy, and the paradox of tolerance. When it comes to tech, I count the bits, not the views

     @worik You've clearly missed my point. I literally stated the technology should be private and secure for all - so telling me there are plenty of fascists on Signal is a moot point (and shows how fucking ignorant they are, using tech from those that despise them). Anyway, good luck finding "room for disagreement" as fascism increases. Maybe you're not as familiar with Karl Popper as you'd like me to believe.

     @kathimmel Firstly, congratulations on de-Googling! Secondly, as recent years passed I signed up for more and more Proton services, and paid for a lot as well. The blessing in disguise here is that it's freed me to shop around and take on services individually as opposed to as a package (which had been playing on my mind more too, from a security standpoint). So while I share some of your frustration, we can take lessons from the experience too (and/or I'm rather desperately trying to find the silver lining haha)
