The fun thing about quantum computing being in the news is seeing all kinds of absolutely terrible people getting quoted and interviewed. Every link is triggering, and I mean that in the most literal sense that I can.

I don't know how to explain just how incredibly toxic quantum computing is as a field. There's some amazing people in the field, but my fucking god, there is so much harassment, assault, racism, misogyny, transphobia, and just plain old petty bullshit.
I fucking hate it.

@xgranade Wow. I had no idea. Why would the field be attracting that kind of people?

@negative12dollarbill That's a good question with a long, long answer. The shortest version I can give is three-fold: (a) so much of this grew out of physics as a discipline, (b) then moved to the tech industry, compounding the problems of physics culture, and (c) the University of Waterloo has had an incredibly outsized influence, and the culture of that instutition is toxic almost beyond description.

@xgranade@wandering.shop I’m really sorry. I also suspect the most recent round of news is all bullshit by Google to keep investors interested when the LLM bust hits.
I didn’t read the article, so maybe they actually demonstrated something but I just… doubt that. -

@aud Eh, maybe? It's weird, because the quantum team there has been around for ages, doing good work (including this!), but then Google puts out a press release four months after the paper comes out? The marketing around these results is weird af.

@aud ...and YouTube announcement video, and scheduled interviews, and and and. Like it's a big deal! But it was also a big deal back in August, when precisely no media reported on it. The whole "quantum mechanics is too complicated for mere mortals" view descended right from Schrödinger himself has done so much damage to media coverage. But I digress.

@xgranade@wandering.shop that smells like a strategically timed press release for sure, yeah.

@Iris_IllEra @whitequark Yeah... that's where I started and did almost 10 years of work. I said what I said, and I stand by it.

Get into NMR! You get to play with qubits without the world's most social-status-poisoned guys being around.
