The shortest version I can give is three-fold: (a) so much of this grew out of physics as a discipline, (b) then moved to the tech industry, compounding the problems of physics culture, and (c) the University of Waterloo has had an incredibly outsized influence, and the culture of that instutition is toxic almost beyond description.
