just had a convo with my friend. she mentioned she doesnt like sake cause its sparkling.

“wait, sake is sparkling? what have i been drinking?” i said. because i also dont like sparkling stuff.

i look at the sake bottle ive been drinking from for fun events for the past year. its vinegar.

i’ve been drinking strawberry flavored vinegar.

    in my defense:

    酢 means vinegar
    酒 means sake

    and:
[two images of very similar bottles of strawberry vinegar and strawberry sake]

its very hard to tell for someone who only kind-of reads Japanese and just saw the component for "sake flask" (酉) and, rightfully assumed, that the bottle that said sake was probably sake.

#I KNOW SAKE ISNT SPARKLING MY FRIEND WAS ALSO WRONG #SHE WAS DRINKING MISLABELED CHAMPAGNE

No no, you don’t get to hide this in the tags

I guess they both got their drinks from their Japanese corner shop and the friend thought the champagne was sake just because it said "酒" somewhere on the bottle. But "酒" very generally means alcoholic beverage.

Chinese speakers tend to translate "酒" as "wine", which can become confusing until you grasp that e.g. gin is also a "wine".

I was working the coat desk at a pub once, and the cook was a friend of mine, and he liked to come out and give us little treats occasionally.

So he comes out and says hey, try this ice cream I made, it's an experiment. So he gives us a plate with two scoops of ice cream and I try it.

"Hmm, this is unusual. Very soft, very creamy ... very fatty flavor, but not bad ... wait ... hey! This is butter!"

What I'm saying is, if we're supposed to find something enjoyable, sometimes we can make ourselves enjoy it. 😃

heh. in my first time in France, I and some colleagues at a buffet had a large variety of cheeses to choose from at the end of a meal. I was determined to try every one of them. I put small pieces on a plate, went back ot our table and started working on them. eventually I got to a very very soft one. a colleague who was enjoying watching me delight with the cheeses tried to warn me, but it was too late: it was butter. not bad, but a little weird without bread underneath.
