Sick Sun (sun@shitposter.world)'s status on Friday, 22-Nov-2024 00:33:17 JST Sick Sun every cryptocurrency currently fails the "easy to set up and maintain node" criteria, which is actually one of the most essential attributes for a decentralized system that people will adopt. - Haelwenn /элвэн/ :triskell: likes this.

frogzone@wizard.casa's status on Friday, 22-Nov-2024 00:37:43 JST frogzone @sun you really only need people in the 90th percentile of tech competence to run a full node, tbh. there should be at least one person in the extended family that can do it.

Sick Sun (sun@shitposter.world)'s status on Friday, 22-Nov-2024 00:38:40 JST Sick Sun @frogzone this is true but it's too hard for me so it's too hard for too many people. when I say too hard I mean the effort exceeds the utility so I don't do it.
some things like polygon chain are in absolute terms, too hard to run. -

Sick Sun (sun@shitposter.world)'s status on Friday, 22-Nov-2024 00:41:09 JST Sick Sun if it takes a shitload of resources (like every node has to have a copy of every transaction) then way less people will run a node.
if it is a giant pain in the ass to install and upgrade, then way less people will run a node.
a decentralized system needs as many nodes as it can get, for security robustness.
the ideal scenario is not everybody runs a node but everybody knows somebody who runs a node. not the entire network is made up of less than a couple hundred nodes run by businesses that are just trying to prop up the token with VC money -

But you can't force people to use your HUB if you do so :akko_derp: -

Sick Sun (sun@shitposter.world)'s status on Friday, 22-Nov-2024 00:45:13 JST Sick Sun I don't think any mainstream blockchain has ledger sharding yet. It's still being worked on. Maybe things will get better when Ethereum gets it working, it's on the roadmap.
Another issue is all these L2s have centralized on-and-off ramps. Work is being done here too but currently you rely on one or a few companies running bridges/validators. -

frogzone@wizard.casa's status on Friday, 22-Nov-2024 00:50:41 JST frogzone @sun >effort exceeds the utility
well yeah when the #banksters are killing off people's access to #banking services for discovering real #money, that has a way of diminishing the utility, sure.
