     They were great for a couple of US steel producers or so.

     They also raised the price level of steel in the USA.

     Which made basically any other US manufacturer of goods that had steel as an input non-competitive on the world market. Overnight. And without additional tariffs on the US market.

     Who paid for the clusterf%ck. The US consumer, and US workers.

     And you know politics is not about "self-interests", it's very much about emotions.

     Feeling good about being better than that ugly foreigner down in the mud.

     Conservatives provide that "stable social order", including some victims down in the order below you who you can kick. For purely practical purposes, foreigners without a vote make a perfect bottom layer.
