      Desk phones do phone calls much better and computers send and receive SMS's via SIP much better.

      @realman543 Any free software SIP client with SMS support will do.

      Linphone is one.

      The issue is setting up asterisk and SIP trunking.

      @Suiseiseki @PraxisOfEvil Do you know if there's a program that will allow you to receive SMS without a SIM? I've wanted this functionality for years but never found anything. I guessed with the phone companies having a monopoly the answer would be no, but maybe you know more?

      You appear to be confused - what makes writing programs easy is all that GNU provides.

      Android uses the kernel, Linux, but is a nightmare to write programs for unless you go install GNU by installing Termux.

      @skylar what I wanted: a computer with all the software capabilities of my laptop that can fit in my pocket, that's as easy to write programs for as linux

      what I got: a gay turd that's a nightmare to program for, managed by companies that actively try to make the software worse to force upgrades

      I don't use it as a phone anymore. Everyone wants to text, might as well be a pager. It's too small to watch videos on, and it's too big to be a timepiece. I've left it at home and didn't regret it.

      I do use sftp in Mixplorer, but I can't access it like a real file system in apps. Android is shit. The sandboxing only makes it worse.

      @KuteboiCoder A SIM card goes into a mobile chipset, which spies on your location at minimum.

      SIM cards also contain a processor that only exists to be malicious, considering that auth could be done more securely with only software (also, many will run whatever Java the mobile tower sends).
