They see the concept of "sexting" between people in the same age bracket as part of healthy sexual development for teenagers growing up in the digital age.
Those videos and pictures ending up in the wrong hands is still abuse however. Offlimits says that breaking E2E encryption to introduce automated scanning of CSAM material can lead to false positives and reduce security, so they conclude that ChatControl is more likely to increase child abuse rates than decrease it.
@SuperDicq@aetios children shouldn't be sexting but making that illegal is fucking insane.
I have read the arguments about false positives, they basically say that at current funding levels the police don't have the manpower to address all the reports they will get. the obvious retort to this by authoritarians will just be "increase police manpower" though, it's not an existential argument against chat control.
@SuperDicq@aetios@sun Also one thing that I often wonder is about the positions of various offices likes Offlimits.nl when it comes to building CSAM scanners because by definition they require having a CSAM collection to create which to me nobody should have long-term except maybe something like offline storage for archival of case evidences.
@lanodan@SuperDicq@aetios worth mentioning that I discovered several months back that a ton of child welfare orgs do support Chat Control (they all take millions of dollars/euros from governments, go figure.)
@sun@shitposter.world@aetios@sns.minovsky.space Drinking, smoking and doing drugs are all things that teenagers shouldn't be doing, or anyone at all really. But almost everyone does it or has at least experimented with it at some point, same with sexting.
I believe that running discouraging campaigns for teenagers to do these things does not work. It has never worked.
I think as a society it would be much better if we simply accepted that these things happen so that we can talk about it. If teenagers are going to be punished they are going to hide it instead and will refuse to talk to an adult when things go wrong.
@SuperDicq@aetios my position is that sharing nude pictures is inherently dangerous but in particular when you cannot trust the corporations that mediate the transfer and sharing of such pictures. I don't think it's like, immoral.
@SuperDicq@aetios when I am a parent I will try to protect them but I expect them to try to hide things from me like I did with my parents, it's the eternal cycle.
@sun@shitposter.world@aetios@sns.minovsky.space I don't have plans to become a parent but if I accidentally do become a parent I will definitely try to make sure that my children would feel comfortable sharing these sorts of things.
Like for example my first experiences with both alcohol and weed all had at least someone's parent present actually.
@SuperDicq@aetios i am not going to get upset about my kid smoking weed and i would teach my kid about sex and consent but things like unrestricted access to pornography bothers me greatly.
@sun@SuperDicq@aetios Honestly, kids shouldn't have unsupervised internet access before 16, and unfiltered before 18, and it should be made very clear to them the kind of people that tend to try to influence them.
@mrsaturday@SuperDicq@aetios that is absolutely my biggest concern about parenting, is effectively teaching a kid about all the people who are leading you to harm to benefit themselves
@SuperDicq@aetios@sun Yup, I'd much rather it would be some hash database that you'd download (likely partially, like via truncating the hash to get a filename). Which of course could allow for massive censorship, but at least would be less questionable than neural nets.
@sun@SuperDicq@aetios Yeah I think filehash would means it's prevented from even being saved and visual hash would prevent publishing it and report to moderators (I expect most would just check the context and never want to look at the picture).
If all this stuff had to wait until 18 like according to you I definitely wouldn't be decently paid software developer like I am today.
But on the other hand I wouldn't have discovered anime and I wouldn't have watched Initial D and I wouldn't spend half my paycheck on car parts every month.
@SuperDicq@aetios@mrsaturday i would be a lesser person if my parents never let me spend entire days traveling on my own for miles, or burning shit up with a chemistry set, or making fireworks or dry ice bombs or treehouses where the floor fell out.
@SuperDicq@aetios@sun A computer is one thing, unsupervised access to Discord or Pornhub is another. I'd be fine with gaming or using it for research or tinkering and such, but the internet has a lot of bad stuff on it. I'd rather they be a little more secure in who they are before they go encountering the various creeps, ideologues, and schizos you encounter.
