@justnormalkorean@zero I also found out recently you can just download an emulator on your phone now right from the apple App Store or google play store
@zero@aes31494 Depending on the game there's probably some fan translations that aim to do a more accurate job to the source material. Rom hacks are known for this.
@justnormalkorean@zero there are one of the games I’ve been playing never got an official release outside of Japan but I was able to find a fan translation and it’s actually pretty good
@aes31494@justnormalkorean I can't even enjoy a lot of old shit anymore because of how aware of localization butchery I've become, wish I could go back to not knowing
I've seen similar circumstances in various linux repositories. The cores often come as separate packages and many are missing. So basically, you have to hand edit the config file to turn on the core Downloader and point it at the proper libretro url.
@Humpleupagus@aes31494@zero This is what irks me about the stories I hear about Linux lol. too much fucking around with shit that just kinda works on Windows.
@justnormalkorean@Humpleupagus@zero Linux is definitely more difficult to operate and anti cheat software is also an issue because it doesn’t recognize Linux
The simplicity of the networking capabilities are to die for, including fuse mount (sshfs), rsync, ssh, and streaming over pulse audio (I can send any cpu's output to any other cpu's input). And being able to script in bash or zsh is also another plus. And automating tasks with cron is a necessity for me.
I own a lot of computers. Many were given to me by people who bought new stuff. I have numerous i3s, i5s, and i7s in the third and fourth gen, a couple 6th gen i7s, one 9th gen i9 and two 14th gen i5s, and that's just my x64 gear. 😏
The 14th gen are use by my wife and I in the home office. I have an i3 that I use for ncmpcpp and a visualizer above my desk attached to two monitors. I have an i7 under my desk with windows to do admin work in ableton / studio one. I have an i5 on my desk running plan9. I have an i3 all-in-one on my desk return that I use to run backups, etc while I'm working. I have an i7 in the living room for retrogaming, movies, music. I have an i5 in the family room for my wife to use for home schooling and playing music. The i9 is for music production. I have a laptop in the living room for a terminal when I need one quickly. I also have an i5 I use as a file server with a few network applications (mpd, local mumble, local irc, caldav, etc). My kids each have a computer too. I have an i7 I use to run my electronic drums. Then I have a three i5s and an i3 at the office. I have a couple of computers in the closet too.
@Humpleupagus@justnormalkorean@aes31494@zero What do you do with all your computers? I have numerous computers too, but find it difficult to actively utilize more than 2, and the second one is a barely used linux mini pc.
I want another custom beast machine, somewhere in the $3000-5000 range. But I can't afford it right now. I'm still waiting on the rest of my disabilitybux -- they give you back pay on when you first were diagnosed with your disabilities, but they only gave me like 1/3 of what I'm owed several months back.
I use i3wm on my work computers. I use konsole as my terminal, ranger as a file browser, and neovim with chadtree and barbar for editing. Since konsole, ranger, and nvim with barbar can have multiple tabs, everything runs like butter.
I also modified my ranger rc.conf to allow me to open specific files on specific desktops. Shift+E(1 though 9) opens a file in nvim on the corresponding desktop. Shift+S(1 through 9) opens a terminal at the directory on the corresponding desktop. Shift+O(1 through 9) opens a file using mime types on the corresponding desktop. The trick was to use nohup, otherwise everything is a child process of ranger and will disappear if ranger is killed.
When using i3wm learning to script for dmenu is a must too. I have a menu that can mount and unmount any file system on my network, or ssh to each cpu, etc.
Okay, I'm gonna try slapping something together since there are a few pairs of adeptus mechanicus eyes ITT and -- holy shit that processor is almost $2000 by itself!
@cowanon@Humpleupagus@xuya@aes31494@justnormalkorean@zero what on earth ain't no way only 18 cores is worth 2 grand if you want high end, start with a ryzen 9 7950X (unless a newer one has come out) and a motherboard with the X670E chipset it may be worth waiting until nvidia releases the 5090
A few days ago a little birdie told me it's more important for RAM to be faster (DDR5 vs DDR4, and for example) than it is to get moar gigabytes. Therefore I'm gonna try to get that going ... but I notice to get DDR5 RAM I'd need an AMD processor instead. Hopefully this isn't too shabby so far. What do you guys think?
It was an accident. I built my i9 rig several years back. It was the hottest thing at the time. I'm gonna wait a few more years before I upgrade. Maybe at 128 cores / ddr7-32000. 😏
Good advice, thanks. And here I was thinking I was doing good making sure both the RAM and mo'bo were DDR5-6000. I don't even know what those numbers mean, to be honest. I'm kinda dumb where it comes to hardware.
Now that you're here think I should start over and post step-by-step again?
@cowanon@Humpleupagus@skylar@xuya@aes31494@justnormalkorean@zero Yeah, it's very much an issue specific to these modern amd systems. Bigger numbers after the ram is better as that limits your cpu speed unless it's faster than the cpu. I think... The sticks in the list I shared were the best available at the time I built mine, like a year ago. You might be able to lower latency sticks now, but you'll never notice the difference unless you're autistic. They also make 2x48gb sticks now, though they're a bit slower I believe. I really doubt you'll need 96gb of ram unless you specifically know that you will, so I'd just go with 64gb total. For what it's worth, I didn't know most of this until I put my own list on fedi and asked people to give their opinions. And damn did people have opinions...
@cowanon@Humpleupagus@skylar@xuya@aes31494@justnormalkorean@zero AMD gpus are tightly tied to the ram speed, and the ram sticks have to be matched at the factory. Not about to go into details now, but getting two 2 stick packs doesn't work. It does, but doing so wrecks your cpu speed. They may figure out how to make larger or 4x paired sticks in the future, but for now your only option is to get larger sticks. Arctic cooler iii 420 or bust. Get the x series motherboards, definitely.
