And the last question is sort of from @ai6yr and sort of from @Brownian_motion
Q8. Which gears do you use in which situation? When do you shift gears? How would you explain this to someone who's relatively new to using their cycle's shifter(s)?

WHO DARES SUMMON THE SINGLE SPEED RIDERS? THE DEITIES OF SIMPLICITY; CYCLING'S CHOSEN ELITE. GAZE UPON OUR SOLITARY GEAR AND STAND IN ASTONISHMENT. WE BOW BEFORE NO HILL; GIVE DEFERENCE TO NO MAN*. WITNESS OUR MIGHTY QUADS AND TREMBLE IN FEAR.
* except fixie riders, they're hard as fuck and scare me a little
@InkySchwartz @daihard @ascentale @meganL @ai6yr @Brownian_motion I’m really quite surprised that the single-speeders haven’t yet shared their opinion on this matter. 😂
@pete @daihard @ascentale @meganL @ai6yr @Brownian_motion I also feel this is an issue only for setups with more than 7-8 cogs in the back. With a 3x7 you simply do not get much deflection and when I had a 2x5 there was effectively minimal deflection.
@daihard @ascentale @meganL @ai6yr @Brownian_motion A8 Cross-chaining ain’t such a no-no these days: I recall Campag using a picture of very obviously cross-chained rider in a catalogue, and I think SRAM near actively encourage it. It it sounds or feels bad though, usually as a result of old components or a chain in need of lube, I’ll avoid.

@ascentale @meganL @ai6yr @Brownian_motion A8: Yeah, I avoid cross-chaining, too. With the big chainring on front, I typically avoid shifting the rear to the three innermost cogs. As @meganL said you can usually feel it.
@ascentale @ai6yr @Brownian_motion A8. I don't name gears (if they even have names). I just do it by feel and would pass the same thing on to anyone I'm teaching.
I would add that some combinations put more strain on the chain because the chain is going more diagonal from front to back, but you can tell by feel what you need to do.
This goes for friction shifting. I can't really comment on latter-day shifting tech. #BikeNite @bikenite
@meganL @ai6yr @Brownian_motion Ahh, yes, this is a good point.. Cross chaining is not great and can make riding more difficult and noisy.
