clarity flowers (clarity@xoxo.zone)'s status on Sunday, 25-Aug-2024 04:26:35 JST clarity flowers @darius’s #xoxofest talk (a reprise of his 2014 talk I that I quote constantly) was a gut punch and reminder that when we’re talking about making a living as a creator, we’re also talking about plugging right into capitalism. Was too engaged to get a quote!

“If we want better networks, then we need to understand—as concretely and as close to ground as possible—what has actually happened to us, and then we need to use that knowledge to try new things in a deliberate and purposeful way with painstaking attention to the human costs of our experiments.”

So I think the answer can't be that we cede everything above ground to billionaires and demagogues and the predatory forces. But I also don't think it can be for us to keep accepting this poisonous status quo that the networks have backed us into.
Which leaves us with only one option, which is: we fix the fucking networks.”

For a handful of you, maybe like two or three people in the audience, you should hear this. It does get better. This did not define me.”
Was really glad to see her saying this. Lot of xoxo talks about how viciously bad the online harassment gets. But it -does- get better.

clarity flowers (clarity@xoxo.zone)'s status on Monday, 26-Aug-2024 01:06:28 JST clarity flowers Dan Olson at #xoxofest really struck a chord with me talking about his anxiety spiral as an artist dealing with envy: “I could do that. Why am I not doing that? What could possibly go wrong?”
So many projects I’ve never finished because of this consistent blend of envy and arrogance and discontentment. Trying to make projects Good like the Good Things I admire instead of just making the thing for the sake of the thing!

clarity flowers (clarity@xoxo.zone)'s status on Monday, 26-Aug-2024 02:50:06 JST clarity flowers Ed Yong passionately argued for the value of birding, especially as an accessible hobby for the immunocompromised and long-coviders. It’s outdoors, communal, and mostly involves sitting around and waiting.
Personally, birding really got me through a very hard year a while back, so I couldn’t agree more. Patient observation, connection with your local ecosystem… learning to love yourself by projecting your love through the binocular lenses.

clarity flowers (clarity@xoxo.zone)'s status on Monday, 26-Aug-2024 03:06:37 JST clarity flowers Cabel Sasser took us on a whole journey, telling the story of discovering an artist — Wes Cook — via an absurdly lovingly crafted mural in a McDonalds in rural Washinton and discovering that he doesn’t have a wikipedia page. Then he stumbled into buying Cook’s entire life work via an ebay auction, and learned so much about a man with a massive body of work (including concepts for many still-standing amusement park attractions) who could have easily been forgotten.

clarity flowers (clarity@xoxo.zone)'s status on Monday, 26-Aug-2024 03:26:20 JST clarity flowers Very funny to follow Sasser’s talk on artistic legacy with Charlie Jane Anders bringing the exact opposite message for the final talk of the final XOXO:
“You can create art that is foolish and strange, which is another way to say you can create art. I don’t want to speak to people a hundred hears from now. I don’t fucking know those people!”

clarity flowers (clarity@xoxo.zone)'s status on Monday, 26-Aug-2024 03:31:45 JST clarity flowers I don’t fully agree with Charlie Jane Anders’ perspective on community building — I’ve learned the hard way that inclusion almost always means exclusion and you have to make hard choices about who you open your doors to, so her talking about inclusion as a universal and essential good didn’t sit right.
But I really loved this bit: communities are built out of moments, not structures! You don’t need to make every moment live forever.
