     @darius’s #xoxofest talk (a reprise of his 2014 talk I that I quote constantly) was a gut punch and reminder that when we’re talking about making a living as a creator, we’re also talking about plugging right into capitalism. Was too engaged to get a quote!

     Dan Olson at #xoxofest really struck a chord with me talking about his anxiety spiral as an artist dealing with envy: “I could do that. Why am I not doing that? What could possibly go wrong?”

     So many projects I’ve never finished because of this consistent blend of envy and arrogance and discontentment. Trying to make projects Good like the Good Things I admire instead of just making the thing for the sake of the thing!

     Ed Yong passionately argued for the value of birding, especially as an accessible hobby for the immunocompromised and long-coviders. It’s outdoors, communal, and mostly involves sitting around and waiting.

     Personally, birding really got me through a very hard year a while back, so I couldn’t agree more. Patient observation, connection with your local ecosystem… learning to love yourself by projecting your love through the binocular lenses.

     Cabel Sasser took us on a whole journey, telling the story of discovering an artist — Wes Cook — via an absurdly lovingly crafted mural in a McDonalds in rural Washinton and discovering that he doesn’t have a wikipedia page. Then he stumbled into buying Cook’s entire life work via an ebay auction, and learned so much about a man with a massive body of work (including concepts for many still-standing amusement park attractions) who could have easily been forgotten.

     What do we take from Cabel Sasser’s deep dive into an almost forgotten legacy? He quotes, “everyone dies twice, once when their body dies, and agaim when their name is spoken for the last time.” Sasser held Wes Cook’s second death at bay.

     Appreciate everything endlessly

     put up a dang portfolio

     go down ALL the rabbit holes

     Because, just maybe… (“we can all live forever! nah just kidding”)

     Very funny to follow Sasser’s talk on artistic legacy with Charlie Jane Anders bringing the exact opposite message for the final talk of the final XOXO:

     I don’t fully agree with Charlie Jane Anders’ perspective on community building — I’ve learned the hard way that inclusion almost always means exclusion and you have to make hard choices about who you open your doors to, so her talking about inclusion as a universal and essential good didn’t sit right.

     But I really loved this bit: communities are built out of moments, not structures! You don’t need to make every moment live forever.

     And that was #xoxofest. I wanna do a full blog post about it soon with my personal reflections and experience. Loved to meet everyone there and catch up with old friends. Missing the friends who weren’t there this time to death. I may never stop missing this extraordinary unique unreplaceable event every late summer.
