I’m looking for some suggestions for which type of DSLR #camera I should purchase.

I am a beginner to #photography so I will not be needing high end professional features. I will be mostly taking pictures of building interior and exteriors which implies a wide lens. The sensor should also work well enough in low light conditions. I’ve settled on DSLR and I’m not interested in Mirrorless.

Since this is my first proper camera I’m interested in buying a new one rather than getting one second hand.

I am currently considering the Nikon D5600 with a 18-55mm lens and I figured that I should ask to see if anyone has a better idea.

@Polychrome I have a D5600 that I'm very happy with (mostly do outdoor shots). One thing I would recommend is a tripod so you can take dark shots with extended shutter times without blurring.

DSLRs may be 'old tech' but it's the most cost-effective way to get into the hobby.

@thatbrickster @Polychrome remote shutter control is really nice for this too because touching the camera can move it slightly.

@Polychrome id still recommend mirrorless, there’s really no advantage to dslr but they aren’t bad either. I had a canon rebel dslr and made some great picture with it, I bought an old model with iirc 12 megapixels for like 200 usd. In the end, the lenses are more important anyway.

@thatbrickster @Polychrome I don't know if it's common now but my first dslr didn't even have an option for remote control so it's the first thing I thought of. I wanted to do astrophotography and I couldn't because it had no remote control, no external power, and the firmware would turn off the camera after a few minutes. I hope they all do better now.

@sun Something I haven't needed but may want to use if I stick with it. Some cameras have apps that offer this functionality but, you know me, I'd rather a physical remote.

@sun Astrophotography was the first time I hit a hard limit with the D5600. I have a tripod but I don't go out to places where light pollution is minimal (urbanite). High ISO doesn't cut it.

My D5600 hides the HUD and display after 5-10 seconds but the camera remains on. I'd like to think the power issue is better if not eliminated.

@sun The D5600 does have post-processing that improves contrast in shots, which is helpful if you're starting out.

@Polychrome Yes. If you're taking RAWs, no PP is applied.

      @lain @Polychrome
Pentax KP would probably be the highest value with insanely good low-light photography.

If I would go back, I would get the Pentax KP. Its been a little while since I last looked, and the Pentax KF is apparently a replacement. I have not looked at how good the KF is.

@lain @Polychrome I just use a cheap 35mm twin lens reflex model kit but that's not digital and developing film is harder than just transferring photos from an sd... oh, and my phone

@Polychrome what's your budget? Low light is probably the hardest to obtain on a small budget given your requirements.

I'd be curious why you're discounting mirrorless, as mirrorless is the path forward, and easier for beginners as you'll see what the camera will actually capture.

My recommendations is to check out https://www.dpreview.com/articles/1328199596/buying-guide-what-to-know-before-buying-your-first-interchangeable-lens-digital-camera and if you're sold on DSLRs, consider a second hand Canon as there's a much wider range of lenses, including affordable low light prime lenses

What to know before buying your first interchangeable lens digital camera
        from @dpreview
Now that the cameras in smartphones have become so good, the question 'why should I buy an interchangeable lens camera' ends up being very similar to 'why would I buy a dedicated camera at all?'. Read our new guide to buying an ILC to see what you gain from keeping your phone in your pocket.

@chendo mirrorless won't do that little vibration in my hand when I take a photo.
