   I don't wanna talk down on Americans, but it's amazing that they started as British, but now are culturally so far from being European.
   
   * US friends did not understand that when we invite them, we are paying and not splitting the bill
   * an American Christian did not understand why I needed candles for Xmas
   * US female friend did get extremely angry at me when I told her what clothing was appropriate for an event. as if I had insulted her. she showed up dressed inappropriately

     @kaia the clothing thing is frustrating as fuck, even in the USA there are events that have a dress code. And every time I have attended one, there was at LEAST one person who deliberately defied it because some Americans consider a dress code to be a disgusting violation of liberty.

     as for candles i wouldn't question it probably ask do you want stuff that smells or non scented

     Dress codes wouldn’t have to be specified if people had enough basic respect for their hosts and those who invited them. Instead you invite them and then they ruin the event by having no social graces regardless of whether they even read the dress code they didn’t follow.
     
     I don’t bother with “society” events of any kind for this sort of reason

     @kaia regarding paying, this is very hard to get over for americans because it is so ingrained here. part of the ritual is insisting to help pay even after someone insists they are paying.

     @sun yeah and that's not bad. it's just different and one has to know.
     
     I love many things about Americans on the other hand. like that you can chat up pretty much anyone in the south and they will be friendly and polite and even try to help to an extend.

     I miss showing up in uniform. It gave me a clear guideline for what to wear while also encouraging others to give me a hand when I didn’t quite know the etiquette

     @kaia I recently went back to the Midwest for a family reunion and on the last leg of the flight, everyone got on the plane and immediately started conversation with the person next to them, and by the end of the flight everyone had new friends.

     uniforms are very good! my bf is a reserve officer so he can marry in uniform :Sheew: it also fixes the "no tuxedo in the morning" issue in church where he'd need a cutaway.

     I prefer uniforms in general. People love to push boundaries and uniforms if properly specified avoid that. I hate the free-for-all of modern event wear. I feel silly calling it formal or evening or dress because most of it has become a mockery, especially in celebrity fashion

     My experiences with US friends are pretty contrary.

     @sun @kaia It used to be a lot more normal to dress up or down to an occasion than recently. I'd say the change did happen in the late 2000s, so "muh freedums" makes sense as a reason to do away with that part of our culture.
