There should be a law against this.
Your average user is going to think something is terribly wrong with their computer just because they didn't sign over their rights to Microsoft.

I'm trying to imagine how this would work with other machines.
"Let's finish setting up your bike" as soon as you try to unlock it, and the pedals freeze up every three days until you agree to Schwinn's demands.
(please don't tell me to try Linux)
@thomasfuchs Nope, but from the comments it's looking increasingly like I'm better off!
@vkc
If your username is anything to go by, you don't need help choosing a Linux distro. Cue suggestions anyway in 3... 2... 1...
@nitpicking @vkc Microsoft has taken dark patterns to a whole new level: black hole patterns!
@geerlingguy @nitpicking @vkc My personal favorite is needing to hit some magic key combo during setup to open a command prompt so I can execute some weirdly named script that will eventually allow me to continue installation without creating a Microsoft account.
@vkc I agree with you entirely. And I know you already use Linux. (Me, too.) Everyone who isn't a Microsoft executive or stockholder, I think (e. g. @geerlingguy) agrees with you.
@vkc Have you considered CP/M-86? ;-)
@vkc I'd like to interject for a... I'm kidding XD.
I absolutely agree with you! This is another great example of dark patterns used by MS to grab more data from their user and also vendor lock them. :(
Most cars these days do pretty much exactly this.
some e-bikes are also appearing with various forms of DRM in their embedded controllers, and even for normal pushbikes there are a lot of proprietary components with planned obsolescence (particularly for the faster/higher end racing bicycles)
@mattdm yuck!
@mattdm @vkc I had a kia in Canada recently which had no speedo-and tachometre, just two numbers for speed and RPM. The manual was like « Only the 1.9l model has the menu option for the speedometre and tachometre. Use this settings to change the frame colour. ». The trip function and unit settings were hidden also. This was worse than the digital displays for the Urquatro and the Golf II. Older cars had the option to see both metric and imperial units on the dial. Now: Pay up for proper dials.
@mattdm @vkc Some trains do it too!
"Do you want to service this train with the manufacturer's maintenance service? [Yes] [Remind me later]"

(The only joke here is there being some interface for this, the bricking down of trains is not a joke, see #NewagGate, #Trainsomware.)
@thomasfuchs @vkc “The story so far:
In the beginning the Universe was created.
This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move.”

@vkc we've let the nerds go to far
@th I have to concur with @w that your comment sounds a bit off. Why "the nerds"? This kind of stupidity is most often pushed by business people in suits. See Logitech mice and HP inkjet printers.
This is a kind of abuse and stupidity people who have a passion for technology (which I'd term more geek than nerd but I digress) probably don't have much patience for.

@th @vkc The nerds (mostly) didn't do this voluntarily, the owner class forced the nerds to do this. There will always be weird techbros hopped up on anarcholibertarian bath salts, but most of the nerds haaaaate this stuff.
I still haven't tried out Windows 11, but I still have leftover Windows 10 Pro licenses (thanks to an MSDN account) so I install Windows 10 Pro when I need Windows.
Am I missing something? I mean, Windows compatible software seems to run just fine on Windows 10, and the install/setup process for Win10 Pro seems ... I dunno, I'm okay with it (I don't install Windows very often).
Am I just being a backwards old fogey, like those of us who stuck with Win98SE way past its prime?
@vkc but, you're on a server called "Linuxmom.net". Surely I should infer that "trying" Linux would be a revelation to you?
@vkc My favorite is the red dot on Windows Defender if you don't consent to back up your files to Onedrive. It's under "security" like you need to take action immediately lest the viruses GET YOU.
@vkc Is there already a name for this UI design paradigm where the choice is between "Yes" and "Later", with no "Never"?
